External subtitles with SRT and UTF8

Ruben Rueda

Question

Hi :)

It seems a common question around the web, but I would like to hear your thoughts.

I have a LG 65SM8200PLA 65" LED UltraHD 4K (webos 4.5), that works like a charm in all aspects. Today I've paid and installed Plex to watch my movies on tv, wich works fine. I like tv shows from korea, and these movies come with external subtitles in format .SRT, these files are encoded with UTF8, and when I want to see the movie from flex via dlna on the tv, it doesnt recognize the subtitle, like it the subtitles didnt exist. From another post, Ive tried to edit the SRT file, and changed it to ASCII, then, I refreshed the content on the media server, played the movie, and the subtitle file was recognized on the tv.

Since I have many sbutitles, its a pain to manually change the files. I must say too, that its thard to believe that a 2019 tv can't read or recognize SRT with UTF8. Maybe ive missed something, but I couldnt find more things to try.

Any tip to avoid converting files each time I want to see a movie with external subtitles with utf8?

Thanks in advance.

Regards :)

If you are having problems with subtitles while viewing with Plex then you would be better off on their forum as the apps (server & client) do all the work (encoding/decoding etc) not webOS itself.

It's nothing to do with the app. He is trying to direct play in LG using DLNA. the external srt file is not being recognized by the TV. He needs to convert to ASCII. The question is can LG fix it so he doesn't have to convert lot of these SRT files to ASCII format for direct play in LG to work.

Hello , There is no setting to select subtitles for series and movies, I tried clicking on the colors on the remote, but nothing worked, I poked around in settings and found nothing. I sent several emails to the company, but no response was received. I remember that there was an option in the previous version, who has the same problem and what can be done?

      Hi all,

      I'm Danny and have a problem with my LG OLED65C8;

since a few months when playing movies, either from my Syno NAS or just plain USB, subtitles are being displayed double (over or above eachother) or are displayed for sometimes minutes after the sentence's been spoken. The videofiles haven't got any hardcoded subs but either subs included in the mkv container or as separate srt of ssa file. Disabling subs removes the display of subs, enabling subs results in double or persistent subs.

Subtitles have been disabled in the accessability menu, factory reset did not help.

I searched but as far as I can see this problem has not been discussed yet, also googled and never came across this problem. Perhaps someone here can help?

      Kind regards, Danny

      SOLUTION, for me at least:

I used ColorControl to reboot the TV. It's weird that a factory reset did not work but a simple reboot did.

I'm watching a movie (mkv) that has 10 built-in link hidden, please login to view, but webOs only shows 8 options and the one I want to select is the ninth option. My TV is LG 55 OLED B6. Is there a way to make this selection?

Hi, I have the option to right click and pick the subtitles on my Mac when watching movies in the VLC Player, but I can’t do this on the LG OLED, though. I already renamed the subtitle file to be the exact same as the video file and I did have the SRT file in the same folder where the movie is. However, when I connect the hard drive to the TV, the subtitle still doesn't appear. The format of my hardrive is NTFS. Can anyone please offer some advice?
