  1. From The Verge:

LG is putting all the software in its new fridge. At CES today, it announced a connected “smart refrigerator” that includes both the webOS operating system and integration with Amazon’s Alexa assistant. This means that the fridge can do everything from automatically adjust its power settings to order groceries with your voice.

The smart fridge has a 29-inch front touchscreen with something called Instaview, a “door in door” that can turn translucent to show you the contents of your fridge. LG also touts its ability to look up recipes, play music, check the weather, and shop online. Instead of sticky notes, users can leave notes and tags on the front using webOS, and a “fresh tracker” can keep track of food expiration dates. Third-party integration with Alexa also means you can use voice commands instead of the touchscreen.

  4. Ready to start using LuneOS?

Great!  Here’s what you need to know:  there is still a lot of work in progress and the current state should be considered as being alpha even though it’s working quite nicely for the parts that are implemented already. Therefore, use is at your own risk. Currently BlueTooth, the accelerometer, camera and ALS are not implemented yet. Audio & wifi should work, though might be buggy. If you have a TouchPad you can start here. You will want to use the “Release” version. Nightly is used for things that are being worked on and bug fixes for the next release.  If you need help installing it, go here.  If you’d like to try the emulator go here. And for the Nexus 4 go here. All the supported devices can be found here.

  5. LG has announced its partnership with Paymentwall to bring the ability to make online purchases on a host of its Smart TVs, powered by its custom webOS 3.0 platform.

LG and Paymentwall want to change that by giving both app developers and users an easy way to do business. App developers will be able to hook into webOS’s features to present a “Buy Now” option in their app or game. Users, on the other hand, simply need to click on that button and enter their credit card details. And since Paymentwall supports all sorts of credit and debit card and e-wallets, including MasterCard, Visa, and AliPay, you won’t need to sign in separately for purchases.

  6. LG webOS for Signage Expands Solution Partners at InfoComm 2016

By AV Network Staff On June 13, 2016

LG Electronics introduced expanded partner solutions for its webOS for Signage platform at InfoComm 2016 last week in Las Vegas, offering new options for business owners deploying digital signage solutions.
     1000px-LG_Electronics.svg.png

webOS allows system integrators to download content and develop customized applications that fit their exact needs. With webOS for Signage, LG’s Smart Platform Signage can be updated simply and quickly via a smartphone or tablet. WiFi connectivity eliminates the need for a wired connection or costly network infrastructure.

Optimized for commercial applications, LG’s webOS for Signage is bringing a new level of integrated benefits to businesses deploying digital signage displays. LG’s digital signage displays feature a high-performance system-on-a-chip (SoC) which works with LG’s webOS for Signage platform to lower the cost of ownership by eliminating the need for PCs or external media players.

“Beyond providing customized and functional solutions for business owners and system integrators, LG’s webOS for Signage now offers business owners a swath of customer experience upgrades, cloud-based solutions, mobile accessibility, screen control, multi-touch solutions with LG’s expanded solution partners,” said Garry Wicka, head of marketing for LG Electronics USA.

New software partnerships are expanding cloud-based digital signage solutions for LG digital displays featuring the webOS platform, as highlighted at InfoComm, including Industry Weapon, ONELAN and Signagelive.

LG’s solution partner demonstrations at InfoComm exemplified the growing number of best-in-class partners to support webOS for Signage as the platform continues to expand and evolve from basic solutions to full-scale enterprise solutions.

  7. LG is adding a GameFly streaming app to its webOS-enabled Smart TVs, which will let people stream games on the TV without the need for a console.

The app arrives in April and will work on LG's 2016 Smart TV models featuring webOS 3.0 and 2015 models with webOS 2.0. Just plug in a gamepad—GameFly recommends the Logitech F310, F710, and Xbox wired controller—and dive into GameFly Streaming packs of titles like Tomb Raider: Game of the Year Edition, Batman: Arkham Origins, F.E.A.R. 3, Darksiders, and Red Faction Armageddon.

The app will also feature Lego Batman 3, Pacman Championship Edition, and WRC4 for families.

LG did not reveal pricing except to say the app will be available for a "low monthly price."

  8. This is a webos user to user support forum. This is not owned by LG. This site has been up before LG purchased webOS from HP. I also wonder if LG reads user/owner feedback as this site has become the top user to user forum and there is a ton of valuable contributions and feedback. I stand with you and hope LG pops in and reads some of the posts on here.

  9. There are numerous articles on the web saying that LG is bringing webOS 3.0 to its 2016 TV lineup, most likely showcasing it at CES in January. This is good news as LG continues development on webOS.

    The Verge: http://www.theverge.com/2015/12/21/10636280/lg-smart-tvs-webos-3-update-ces-2016

WebOS 3.0 has a few notable features. You'll be able to split your screen into two different channels at the same time, or one channel and another source like a Blu-ray player. You can also run LG's Music Player app through your speaker setup with the TV turned off, as well as control LG smart appliances using LG's IoTV app.

The software's new standout functions, however, are a trio of "magic" features — LG's stand-in for "smart" — aimed at taking advantage of webOS 3.0's deeper hardware integration. Magic Zoom will let you magnify any portion of the screen without any loss in picture quality, according to LG. The company is also updating its Magic Remote so it can toggle set-top boxes on and off and control DVR functions as well. Magic Mobile Connection is an Apple AirPlay-like feature that lets users stream apps from their smartphone to LG smart TVs. None of those appear all that "magic," but they do bring some unique capabilities to webOS 3.0.

LG is also updating its interface with new Channel Advisor and Channel Plus recommendation features. Similar to TiVo, Channel Advisor will analyze what and how you watch to predict what you'll want to see and suggest upcoming time slots. Channel Plus will mix in broadcast channels with over-the-top streaming into a unified list, to help remove barriers to how viewers consume live and cable TV versus streaming services like Netflix.

The company released webOS as open source in the hopes companies like LG would adopt it for commercial products. According to LG it has been developing a major version of webOS for use on its 2016 line of smart TVs.

New features in webOS 3.0 include watching videos from two different sources at the same time. It also supports streaming from smartphones to the TV.

LG is highlighting three features on webOS 3.0 under the "Magic" brand, including Magic Remote, Magic Zoom, and Magic Mobile Connnection. Magic Zoom is intriguing as LG claims TV owners can magnify objects and text without degrading picture quality.

The new smart TVs featuring webOS 3.0 will be launched at the CES next month.

  10. LG strikes new deal with Google to bring Google Play to webOS

Those with LG smart TVs are about to have more options to stream video directly from their flat screen. In an intriguing new partnership, the company announced that it will add capability for Google Play Movies & TV to its WebOS smart TV platform (as well as its older NetCast 4.0 and 4.5 platform) this month. This will make webOS the first smart TV platform outside of Google’s Android TV system (included on select Sony TVs) to offer access to Google Play Movies & TV directly.

  11. Thanks to Ruud, one of our members, for posting about this article from CNET.

CNET is reporting as of yesterday that LG is planning to update all 2014 TV models to webOS 2.0. This would be a flip in direction from what they had announced earlier in the year. The articles states that the update will start rolling out mid year to all models. We'll have to wait and see!

The company has confirmed to CNET that its 2014 Web OS 1.0-equipped TVs, including sets like the 55EC9300 OLED, will be updated to version 2.0 of the operating system.

The update will happen sometime in the second half of 2015, and will be rolled out to every 2014 TV with Web OS, in every territory worldwide.
