gigabit ethernet on smart TV

Mihai B.

Question

Hello,

Is there any way of installing an usb gigabit network adapter on a webos smart TV?  The builtin wired adapter is only 100mbps (on a 2000$+ TV, shame  on you LG!!!)  while the wifi (N) is very poor, with the router at 1m from TV it only gets half the bandwidth of the wired network. Anyway the wired network  maxes out near 100mbps but I need more bandwidth as I have 4k video content with bitrates grater than 100mbps which I cannot stream without stuttering to TV through XPLAY/PLEX.

Kind regards,

Hi. One more question as i ordered cable matters adapter and it's on it's way. Do you use it on your USB 3.0 port or standard 2.0 ports? If on 3.00 can you try Usb 2.00 and report if it works as my TV has only Usb 2.00 ports. Thanks again in advance.

i tried all ports and all works. now it's connected to 3.0.

i have only one annoying thing with this connection type. i am using lg smartshare as a dlna server and "photos and videos" app on tv for watching things. sometimes that "photos and videos" app couldn't find my pc. than i have to click multiple times to refresh button from top right, close the app and reopen the app. other things works perfectly like plex, iptv, youtube etc.

Unfortunatelly it doesn't work.

Plugged it on my LG and it says Unknown usb Device connected. But no internet connection. All LED lights on Cable Matters work fine and works normally.

Works on my PC and Steam Link device though.

Will look for a Tv Box which can handle 4K ULTRA HD Playback and HDR with android i guess. No money for the ultima Nvidia Tv Shield :(

very interesting. if led light works fine, it should work too. if you just look tv options, yes it said there is no internet connection but it can. did you check connected device list on your modem?

nvidia shield is perfect solution for everything. my suggestion is; try to save money for a few months and buy it. don't waste your money for other devices.

I ended up picking up this cable matters ethernet adapter (

link hidden, please login to view
) but it doesn't work properly on my 65C9PUA.

The TV gets an internet connection, however it caps out at 100mbps just like the onboard lan.

Not sure if anyone has other recommendations for alternate adapters. I would prefer to not need to buy 4 or 5 of them to see what works.

Wondering if Cable Matters changed how they make their adapter considering it seems like more people are posting that it doesn't work properly.

Yeah, on a PC the adapter works just fine, I get Gigabit speeds no problem testing with iperf3.

It's my C9 OLED that's having problems with it.

Although weirdly I do need to do a network reset in Windows to get it to not bug out every time I plug it in. Maybe that's part of the problem?

My guess is that TV's are more complicated with these adapters. A fairly cheap Tv Box which can handle 4K Hdr Direct Play from the Plex Media Server looks a pretty solid solution. Fingers crossed again for me. Will report back with my results once i got my hands on Xiaomi mi S Box.

Ok so i've got the box. Everything works fine. Connected Cable Matters adapter and ethernet shows as connected. Have access to the internet BUT. Trying to Direct Play an HEVC HDR file requires 160mbps in my PMS Dashboard. It seems that it caps at 90-95mbps based of the diagram...Tried connecting on my 5Ghz band and caps even lower 72mbps (Box is next to my router). My Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 connected on the 5Ghz band even a room further from my router can recieve over 200mbps. It depends if i move or not. Sometimes is 160mbps and others at 260mbps.

My question is why Cable Matter Usb to Ethernet adapter as it says is a Gigabit caps the Box at 100mbps...??? Should i try another adapter maybe? Even a Usb 2.0 to ethernet adapter?

My E8 has a wireless AC connection achieving 650\866 Mbit. It streams high bitrate 4K flawlessly... Wireless. The first to give up processing is my Synology DS216, depending on the codec used in the source file. So don't blame the TV too quickly and do a proper analysis.

i guess your tv is 2018 model.

some older models have wifi issue too. like my uh850v(2016). wifi chipset gets too hot and shutdown itself if i stream over wifi too much. can't reach wifi until restart the tv.

Hi- I have the Cablematters adaptor- model number 202013

link hidden, please login to view

I have plugged it into my 55  C9 PLA and it says an unknown device is connected- I have a blue light on the adaptor and the two flashing lights also light up. I get internet connection BUT I only get 19-25 Mbps download when I can get 190 Mbps using the Cablematters adaptor connected to my PC- I have 200Mbps fibre into my house. I have unplugged/plugged and switched on and off many times- still those throttled speeds on the TV.

When I plug into the TV's wan port direct from my router I get about 90Mbps which is what I would expect for LG's 10/100 wan port. What is strange is that I just had a Netgear 8-Port ethernet switch arrive- and when I plug into the LG ethernet port BUT go through this ethernet switch it also throttles it down to 19-25 Mbps. Obviously I am missing a setting. My router is an Asus RT-AX92U which is in a mesh system. Thanks for any advice

Depends on the USB connection used on your TV. Is it 2.0? That could explain, USB 2.0 does have enough bandwidth for data transport, but also requires processing power from CPU inside the TV.

The issue with your switch is a different thing. Perhaps your network gets choked by broadcast storms... But you need to do some signal sniffing to really find out.

OK- so I think the Cable masters adaptor it is working now- enabling flow control on the Netgear gigabyte switch seems to have made it work- don't ask me why- or even what it is! But

went up from 40Mbps to 130Mbps and it went up on the other apps too. The other thing I found is that reported faster speeds than the LG app- Internet Speed 2 reported but also faster than the Netflix built in internet speed checker. I guess, the real question is, does it make a difference- and yes, Netflix etc do feel snappier/less buffer. Plus, I hope my tv speeds will go up further and beyond 130Mbps as the speeds from my internet provider gets faster.

I bought this adapter before I found your forum asix ax88179 thread

link hidden, please login to view

It works and can play 4K video files without continuous buffer updates. But when I turn my LG Oled55B9 off and on again the connection is lost. If I activate Wifi, it is he who takes control (bad). It doesn't take much for this to work. But for now it is not usable.

Hi All,

As owner of a C9 and CX I am extremaly confused. I have been working with ethernet gigabit adapter without any problem for one year. I bought a CX few days ago and it is not working as expected (as C9 does). It seems that CX is limiting the DOWNLINK to 120mbps as maximum, all tests throw strange DOWNLINK values (via WiFi 5G and Ethernet Gigabit) so I would like to know if you find same problems.

Right now I am able to play 4K high bitrate films with my C9 but I can not via my CX...and this is the new model!

Is someone informed about this?

Thanks a lot!

I just made an account in hopes that someone could help me out. I tested a usb 3.0 ethernet adapter that I already had with my B7. The adapter leds are flashing, I get internet connection on the TV and I can access DLNA devices on my network. Wifi and ethernet both say disconnected in WebOS as others have stated. My problem is that casting youtube or netflix no longer works. This is a function I use a lot, but it won't work when connected with the adapter. My phone can find the TV, but when trying to cast anything it says trying to connect forever. Casting works fine when connected to the built in ethernet port or wifi.

My question is: can someone confirm that casting to youtube and netflix works when using the Cable Matters ethernet adapter that others have used? It seems in most cases either everything works or nothing works, so I'm trying to find out if my adapter is an odd one where everything but casting works, or if casting has been broken in an update over the years. Really hope someone can help me out.

Hi friends, I am developing a small server in a hotel to integrate all our system (home automation, checkin/checkout, door openings and televisions). My idea is to launch a promotional video on the televisions when the door is opened the first time after a checkin  (among other things). can I do it with a smart tv with webOS? If so, how can I do it?
