Yes, Plex is an alternative, but it is not free, DS Video is!

Plex Media Server, players for desktops and streaming devices all free.

What do cost money are Plex Pass and mobile apps.  Plex Pass is not essential for day to day use, but the ability to sync content to mobile devices makes it well worth the money in my opinion.  If you are on the Plex mailing list they occasionally run promotions, my lifetime membership cost considerably me $74.99 instead of $119.99.  When it comes to the mobile apps, well they are not not exactly expensive.

Of course you have to have a Synology device that is supported by Plex so it is not the be all and end all.

A article on Plex Pass will tell you whether or not you need it:

There is a great alternative to DS Video app. Install Plex!

Would let me play other file types that LG havent got around to including playback for (ie M4A) or is this just for being able to access media on a NAS directly from the TV? Thanks

Today I have an old sony, with 5V line issues (so no USB, no WI FI, etc...).

I am using DS Video from Android and IOS, streaming to a chrome cast, the same way I am watching YouTube or Netflix today.

I intend to buy a new TV and for now the main option is OLED55C8P, a very expensive model in Brazil.

My Sony with chromecast goes to my son's room and I would like to use my wide content in DS918+ directely to my new (probably LG) TV, with DS Video, that in my personal opinion is better than Plex.

It wolud be great if LG and Synology work togheter to achieve this.

Thanks @wiz2003 for the reference to Emby - I'll give it a try, it seems to be available on Samsung TV too. Would you say it's better than Plex, which is the other solution I find regularly mentioned as an alternative? Plex is OK, but I find DSVideo is snappier and crashes less for me (again, on 5 years old Samsung TV - I don't know yet about how it's running on an LG with WebOS)

I'm so disappointed and angry at myself that I didn't check it before purchasing C9 OLED... I wouldn't even thought that it can be such a big deal and problem... I don't get it why company such as LG doesn't care to create one more app to meet needs of such big community like Synology users... It seams that they don't want Webos to be competitive to Android platform at all... Shame on them...

Lack of Synology DS Video is preventing my purchase of an LG TV. Emby & Plex are just stopgaps & don’t suit my or others needs. Help me move from Samsung, bring this app to WebOS thanks.

I am really dissapointed by LG Webos and its DLNA player, SmartShare and the whole user experience. SmartShare is really the worst piece of Smart TV software that I have ever seen.

LG pls, this app is available on so many of your competitors. I really like your hardware and other software that WebOS provides, please add DSVIDEO. Thank you.

It is frustrating when I try to play a 4K video file but WebOS is unable to play it while my computers and mobile phones have absolutely no issues running them. Either allow DS Video or other external players in to your system or you are so going the way of the dinosaurs

I had a beautiful LG TV 65UJ6300 4K IPS with the awesome magic control... but when i bought my really needed Synology NAS i felt somehow disappointed because i coult not install the Apps that are available in other platforms, i have an Apple TV 4 and its perfect, but sadly one day the TV died, so i had to replace it... this time i had to go for samsung, just thinking about the integration with my NAS and the TV Apps and the magic control i could replace it someway better with a wireless mouse and pc keyboard (i didnt know that anyone can use this with the most of SmartTVs), so LG should have this thing in mind.

      Hi there,

I have an LG smart TV OLED65G36LA (LG OS v03.20.17, webOS TV version 8.20.0-710) , and the Prime Video App was no longer able to update (from Dec 2025) and therefore could no longer be used.
I have tried uninstalling the app and re-installing, and that was unable to work, so then applied a full reset on the LG TV and so had to reinstall all of my other apps (Apple TV, Netflix, etc etc) which all successfully downloaded so confirmed network connections and setup are all confirmed working.
When I try to download the Prime Video app, it remains stuck on the download screen and is unable to update.
      Thanks

      Hello there!
Recently the prime video app started to require the update to open, and now i am having a problem, because this app update REQUIRES to a system update of firmware (to webos24),
but it will make impossible to homebrew later.
So, can someone at least provide the last or update ipk of amazon (amazon.ipk), so i can install manually?
      Thanks!

      Hello,

It would be nice to have an ability to play video (not only?) content from folder in shuffle mode.

      Thanks.

Our LG TV does not show files properly when a new file is added in a directory.
We have a Synology diskstation ethernet drive with DLNA and if we download a new file (in the dedicated download folder) or we copy a file from a PC to a folder, the file is not seen in the LG TV.
Sometimes it's there in few minutes, sometimes it's not visible for days! turn on&off is not working.
If we want to watch a video we need to load it on a USB stick, which is definitely not nice in 2019.
Looking at synology forums the DLNA file list should be automatically updated when a new file is added, is there any way to force refresh from LG app?

      Thanks

I have many movies, mp4 or mkv file with cover art muxed,  but SmartShare

I'm not on DLNA but in HDD on USB 3.0 port so not using media servers like Windows or Plex.

Where do i have to put cover arts? Side-by-side in same directory of the file with same name like: movie1.mp4 - cover1.jpg ?
