From LG Smart TV is it possible to play an MP4 vidoe file from my NAS? If possible how do I do it?

I would like to play MP4 video file from my NAS, is this possible from LG Smart TV? I tried on the TV and did not see how I could do this, I also did not see any App that could help me in this area.

My LG TV is connected to my home network so has direct access to my NAS.

I use the Plex app to access my NAS.

My NAS (which is a QNAP) has a Plex Server built into it.  The Plex Server collates and has access to all my Movie etc.

You could also run  the Plex Server from your home PC and achieve the same result.

I use Macs and my LG TV has AirPlay. It allows me to play any of my hundreds of MP4 files, from various mounted media drives, directly to my TV.

What is the make and model of your NAS?  This will determine if it is possible to install and use something like Plex or Emby.

You may not need anything extra. When I press the Input button on the remote for my LG 50UK6090PUA - in addition to the expected HDMI1, HDMI2, etc. there is also my server listed. I pick that and navigate to the video I want.

There are plenty of reasons that my case may be different from yours. I am using a WD MyCloud that is running its stock DLNA server and my files are mkv files instead of mp4. Still, it is worth a try and costs nothing in dollars or time.

Thanks everyone for your suggestion. I was hoping not to use a media server to play my video files. Was hoping there would be a simple app like VLC or similar that I could just play from the TV.

Seems like not possible, I will just use my notebook, project screen on TV and just play the video files from my NAS from there.

My suggestion was not using the server to do the playing. The TV was the player, it just used the server as the place to find the files.

Hi @PoeyYong Wong

If we knew what model your NAS was the forum could probably confirm whether it supports DNLA, which if it does should show up in webOS is configured correctly.

Using an app such as Plex or Emby would give you an overall better experience than just using DNLA though (in my opinion).
