According to the developer site, the Web Engine powering the Apps and I assume the Web Browser on WebOS is built on version 53 of Chromium (for 2018-2019 models) or Chromium 68 (for 2020 models). Version 53 is from 2016, and 68 is from 2018. The current version is 85.

The latest version of JavaScript used  by modern websites (ES7) is only supported in version 68 and above, and there has been some evidence that although WebOS is using version 53 of Chromium the browser is not fully compatible with the previous JavaScript version (ES6).

The result is that by keeping the WebOS browsers locked in older Chromium bases users will find more websites become unusable on our Smart TVs as old sites are upgraded to new versions and new sites come out. This is not an issue for Android based Smart TVs where users can install current web browsers of their choice.

LG is supposed to be a leader in technology- I have been incredibly pleased with my LG phones and other appliances but am extremely disappointed with the proprietary WebOS browser on LG Smart TVs. IN 2020 it is unacceptable thar such a fundamental function of a smart device (web browsing) is so out of date.

Excellent post, something LG might finally listen to due to its technical basis.

If you agree please reply to the OP’s post because change in this topic is way overdue.

Currently I am unable to use my LG for the only reason I have bought exactly due to this topic. Now I have to consider buying another tv. And chances are very little it will be LG since their product is becoming unsupported a little after it’s purchase.

sad.

@Brennan Phoenix I wholeheartedly agree with your excellent post. It is great that you have"pointed the finger" so well, with facts and figures that they cannot refute and excuse.

As you and others are saying, this current state of affairs with such an important Smart TV function (a workable and updateable browser), compared with the equivalent Android situation, positions LG in a very bad light compared with other manufacturers.  This has certainly opened my eyes VERY WIDE, so when I am ready to change my TV, LG may well be very low down the shopping list!!

Does anyone know how to upload a new browser? I have a 55UK6090PUA model. I can't use my bluetooth keyboard. After using the the point and click method to enter a web site, it says it is not compatible with the current browser.

In today’s competitive world, having the freedom to create on your own terms is more important than ever. With that in mind, LG Taiwan recently introduced its latest IT lineup through a creative collaboration with renowned visual designer
link hidden, please login to view – an initiative that celebrates the dynamic lifestyles of modern professionals.
The showcase took place at a trendy café popular among freelancers, setting the perfect scene to demonstrate how LG’s technology fits seamlessly into both creative workflows and daily life.

At the video editor’s station, LG highlighted high-performance tools designed for intense editing environments. The setup, resembling a professional post-production suite, featured the UltraGear OLED GX9 and the CineBeam S Ultra-Short Throw 4K Projector – demonstrating the depth, detail and precision of LG’s display technology.

In contrast, the graphic designer’s space was bright, open and designed for maximum flexibility. With the LG gram Pro 2-in-1 and Smart Monitor Swing on display, this area showcased tools that offer creative professionals unmatched portability and versatility – ideal for capturing inspiration anytime, anywhere.

Alongside the themed zones, guests explored a hands-on product and award showcase featuring the LG gram Pro 2-in-1, Smart Monitor Swing, CineBeam S and UltraGear OLED GX9. The display also spotlighted global honors from CES, Red Dot and iF Design Awards, reinforcing LG’s growing reputation as a leader in IT innovation.
Opening the event, LG Taiwan Managing Director Jeong Yeon-kwan introduced the LG’s vision and philosophy of “Affectionate Intelligence” – an approach that puts people, emotions and usability at the center of technology. He emphasized LG’s commitment to creating solutions that don’t just perform, but connect with everyday human experiences.
Designer Jyunccihli also took the stage to share how LG devices have helped elevate her creative process. From spontaneous sketching on the LG gram Pro to immersive design reviews on the LG Smart Monitor, she described how LG’s innovation continues to expand her artistic potential.

Her newest trio of artworks – Spiral Nebula, Galactic Coordinates and Rotating Planet – draws inspiration from the cosmos and pairs with LG’s latest products: the LG gram, LG Smart Monitor, and CineBeam projector. Reflecting LG’s theme of “Light but Mighty,” the series fuses abstract celestial visuals with the spirit of innovation.
“As with the universe, true lightness is not emptiness – it’s a hidden yet powerful force that upholds cosmic order,” says Jyunccihli. “To me, ‘lightness’ is a form of strength: intangible yet immeasurably profound, just like the universe itself.”

To bring the creative energy to a wider audience, LG Taiwan launched the Creative Relay Challenge, encouraging the public to personalize designs using elements by Jyunccihli. Open to all, participants can use platforms like Instagram Stories to share their creations.
Submissions are open through June 30, with selected entries eligible for exclusive prizes and the chance to be featured on LG Taiwan’s official platforms.

      Viewing videos from
link hidden, please login to view was fine up to about one month ago. I do not know if there was an upgrade, but videos from that site  cannot be played any longer on this tv. From the same wifi network (home network) videos from that site play fine to a number of devices (Android phones, 2 win11 laptops, 1 win10 laptop).
Adjusted all browser settings (JavaScript, cookies), cleared cookies, cleared all browser data and history.
      No updates available to download
Finally, reset to factory settings but still videos from cannot be played on the tv set.

My WebOS browser always crashes if I go onto the BBC news website. It is the only site I have this problem with. I've tried the usual solutions, clearing the history/cache/cookies and I don't think it is memory as I have no other problems. Ever so grateful for any suggestions. TIA.
