Video can not display in right orientation in my LG Smart TV

Question

am a LG customer from Hong Kong, I encounter a video display issue in my LG Smart TV. I reported this to Hong Kong support team, but it seems that they cannot help me and giving me an unsatisfactory explaination, so I seek for help from here.

My Smart TV model is 43UH7500 with running WebOS 05.30.20, which is the latest version, the build in media player cannot display video in correct orientation, the portrait MP4 video I taken from various smartphone become landscape direction in the TV, for instance, I take a video of Eiffel Tower when travelling to Paris, the tower will lie down horizontally when displaying in the TV no matter the file source is come from a DLNA media server or direct USB connection, even from your LG media server, Smart Share, while there is no problem when displaying in other video player, e.g. Windows media player or Smart TV of other brand.  I contacted Hong Kong Support and attached the sample video to them for investigation, turns out they reply me that is the "feature" of LG TV, and did not commit taking any follow up action to fix this issue.  Here is their final reply.

"According to your case, we tested the video you sent to us, the problem is not related to hardware or operate.

TV's player do not meeet your requirements. We will submit your comment to company for reference."

I feel very disappointing with the response,  is watching a video in correct orientation is my requirement only?  And other users will feel happy to see rotated video?  All I sense is an irresponsible excuse without caring customer experience.

I hope anyone can confirm if that really is "feature" of LG TV worldwide as claimed by Hong Kong support team, and there is no plan to fix this issue. My house is small but have 3 LG TVs because of its famous brand with outstanding quality, but I really feeling very disappoint this time.

Your problem is "vertical video syndrome" and I have not seen a TV that can do what you ask. If I read on internet it about this they say Portrait mode video is not video. So what can you do:

  • Use a video editing program to rotate your video.
  • It seems Plex is capable of handeling Portrait mode video. There is a native app for the LG tv for Plex
  • Mount your TV on a wall and rotated it if needed.

But in general, don't make Portrait video if you every want to see it on a TV.

For the past few years I have been using a 2nd generation Apple TV to watch YouTube videos on my LG Smart TV, however as of today Apple have disabled their YouTube app for this particular device.
I presumed I would be able to use a YouTube app on my TV to continue watching videos in this way, after all has anyone ever heard of a Smart TV without a YouTube app? Since most new TVs are smart TVs these days most people I know have one and they all have the capability to play YouTube videos, usually you don't even have to download the app as it is one of the ones that comes pre-installed.
However I cannot find a YouTube app in the LG content store. I've not really tried to install new apps on my TV since getting it so I don't know if I'm looking in the right place, or it is one of those things like with smartphones where there are multiple places you can go and download apps from.
Bizarrely though, despite there being no YouTube app, there is a YouTube kids app, so it's not like LG have never heard of YouTube or anything, they just don't seem to have realised that people other than kids watch videos on it.

      Hello,
Is there any way of installing an usb gigabit network adapter on a webos smart TV?  The builtin wired adapter is only 100mbps (on a 2000$+ TV, shame  on you LG!!!)  while the wifi (N) is very poor, with the router at 1m from TV it only gets half the bandwidth of the wired network. Anyway the wired network  maxes out near 100mbps but I need more bandwidth as I have 4k video content with bitrates grater than 100mbps which I cannot stream without stuttering to TV through XPLAY/PLEX.
      Kind regards,
