Better subtitle handling/options (saving Code Page&transparent background)

I have LB650V webOS TV and it is very annoying having to reselect the (Latin 2) subtitle encoding (Code Page) every time when playing the movie. Absolutely no excuse not to save the last used choice for the subtitle Code Page so I hope it will be implemented in the future firmware updates.

And one more thing about the subtitles: the options to turn on the transparent background and/or the character outlines has to be done - to improve the readability.

Hello, chupo_cro. Update your TV firmware and Code Page will be saved, and every next playing it will be like last time.

Best regards,

Milan

So the Code Page choice saving has already been solved? Nice to hear :-) I have disabled automatic SW updates because I wanted to first read the changelog and wait to see the user reports but couldn't find any changelogs :-/ So I am still using firmware 03.23.13 shipped with the TV. I can see the latest firmware is 4.30.16 - can you confirm this FW didn't introduce some new bugs? For example, with 03.23.13 web browser often suddenly just restarts.

Do you maybe know if SW update can mess up some settings (e.g. calibration settings)?

Thank you for your reply

You were right - after updating the firmware to 04.30.16 the Code Page option remembers the (last used) state. I've also noticed new icon design, sooner disappearing notifications after inserting/removing the USB stick, more info in the About menu (MAC addresses), faster responding menus/options and faster previewing contents of the removable drives.

Unfortunately web browser still sometimes restarts when browsing the pages. However, it now restarts with 'Out of memory' error code (before there wasn't any error reports).

I hope the transparent subtitle background and subtitle outline options will be implemented in the near future.

And there is one more thing about the subtitle handling - I believe it's so important it deserves a separate thread so I am going to open a new topic...

Hi!

I have LED TV LG 70UK6950  and I have the same problem like its described in first post -  I must to reselect the subtitle encoding (Code page 1250) every time when playing the movie.

Is possible to save  these settings for future use?

I have exactly the same problem with LG 55SM9010PLA. I have to set the Windows 1250 code page for every movie i wanna watch with subtitles...
BTW the menu for code page change is hidden really well. Average users have no chance to find it without online help or big chunk of luck...

Hello, I have LG OLED65B9SLA, newest firmware 5.10.30 and I have same problem. Every time (also for same movie which I watched before) I have to set correct encoding (Windows-1250). Is possible remember last encoding settings until I change it to different settings? Or is possible set it somewhere as default settings?

I can offer some suggestions on how you might address the subtitle encoding and readability issues on your LG LB650V webOS TV:

  1. Check for Firmware Updates: Regularly check for firmware updates for your LG TV. Manufacturers often release updates that include bug fixes and improvements. Newer firmware versions may address the issue you are experiencing or introduce new features that enhance subtitle options.

  2. Contact LG Support: If you find that the subtitle encoding setting is not being saved or if you have suggestions for improving subtitle options, consider reaching out to LG customer support. They may be able to provide additional assistance or pass on your feedback to their development team.

  3. Subtitle Settings on Media Player: If you're using an external media player (e.g., a streaming device, Blu-ray player, etc.), check if it has subtitle encoding options. Adjusting the settings on the media player might override the TV's default settings.

  4. Explore Third-Party Apps: Consider using third-party apps or media players that offer more subtitle customization options. Some apps may allow you to save subtitle preferences for future playback.

  5. Subtitles from Different Sources: If you're obtaining subtitles from different sources, try using subtitles that are already encoded in Latin 2 (or the desired format). This way, you might not need to change the encoding manually each time.

  6. Report Feedback: If your TV has a feedback or suggestions feature, use it to provide feedback about the subtitle encoding and readability options. Manufacturers often value user feedback for product improvements.

  7. External Subtitle Devices: If the TV's built-in subtitle options do not meet your requirements, you can explore using external subtitle devices that offer more advanced features and customization.

Regarding the transparent background and character outlines for subtitles, these features might be dependent on the video content and the subtitle format used. Some media players and apps allow you to customize subtitle appearance, including background transparency and character outlines. Again, exploring third-party apps might provide more control over subtitle settings.

Remember that software and firmware updates are essential for improving user experience and addressing issues, so keeping your TV and connected devices up to date is advisable. If the features you're looking for are not available in the current firmware version, there's a chance they might be added in future updates.

With a commitment to creating a better life for all entailing a greener future for everyone, LG is taking all the necessary steps to realizing a healthier planet for future generations. These include designing and executing green initiatives, such as rethinking operational processes and product lifecycles to reduce carbon emissions and waste, as well as developing technologies that promote sustainability and inclusivity.

In line with this overarching mission, LG Indonesia recently launched its ‘Better life for all’ campaigns to inspire the country’s younger generation to adopt sustainable lifestyles. This exciting event focused on promoting a sustainable food culture and raising awareness of food issues in a time when food waste and food insecurity is high in Indonesia.
The country faces an alarming food waste issue, ranking second globally with an annual generation of 20.93 million tons, according to the United Nations Environment Program Food Waste Index Report 2021. This waste results in economic losses ranging from IDR 213 to 551 trillion per year1 and exacerbates food insecurity, with Indonesia ranking 77th out of 125 countries on the 2023 Global Hunger Index.2 LG aspires to fight food waste and insecurity issues by engaging the younger generation, who make up over 50 percent of Indonesia’s population.

The campaign began this March with ‘Better Life Recipe,’ an event in collaboration with renowned chef
link hidden, please login to view. As part of this event, Devina created a recipe designed to minimize food waste. On Instagram and TikTok, she offered her followers a choice between two traditional Korean dishes: a scrumptious bibimbap with taichan sauce and a delicious bulgogi (Korean marinated beef dish). Through a poll, bulgogi emerged as the winning dish, later making another appearance in the campaign. To further raise public awareness and spark conversation, LG ran the ‘Better Life Social Challenge’ – #MaskaPintarLG – encouraging young Indonesians to recreate the zero-food-waste recipe themselves.
Continuing the campaign in April, LG hosted the “Better Life Festival,” an offline program aimed at promoting sustainability by raising public awareness about the adverse effects of food waste.

The two-day festival, held at Chillax Sudirman Jakarta, featured an array of activities, such as green workshops and expert panel discussions, designed to engage and educate attendees. The festival was a resounding success, attracting over 2,000 participants and igniting a passion among Indonesia’s youth for a new era of eco-conscious living. The event was organized into several interactive zones, including ‘Jane’s Boutique,’ ‘Jack’s Open Kitchen’ and ‘CRAFT SHOP,’ each with a unique focus.

‘Jane’s Boutique’ featured the LG Styler, a product that introduced visitors to the benefits of steam-refreshing garments, as well as the LG WashTower. Participants could engage in a quiz on clothing care and sustainable practices, and even create durable bags from recycled banner materials, underscoring LG’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Visitors could also learned about LG’s air purifiers, including the LG PuriCare AeroTower and AeroFurniture – products with components created from recycled plastics.

Next, ‘Jack’s Open Kitchen’ featured cooking demonstrations by Chef Devina Hermawan, who creatively used leftover ingredients to prepare delicious dishes and beverages, such as tea made from imperfect apples, aiming to reduce food waste in Indonesian households.

This zone also featured LG’s diverse array of innovative products that help reduce food waste, such as LG InstaView Door-in-Door refrigerator. This refrigerator allows users to check the contents by knocking twice on the panel without opening the door, preventing the escape of cold air. Featuring cutting-edge innovations such as LinearCooling and DoorCooling technologies, the fridge can extend freshness of stored food and contribute to effective food waste reduction.

Moreover, in partnership with the Badan Pangan Nasional (BAPANAS/National Food Agency), FoodCycle Indonesia and Universitas Prasetiya Mulya – a local university that developed a composting solution for food waste – LG facilitated a broad range of activities to promote sustainable living. A booth was set up for visitors to make food donations, supporting BAPANAS’s Save Food movement to decrease national food waste.

And, as the next leg of the campaign, LG Indonesia organized a food donation drive from May 10-12 in the Jakarta and Tangerang areas. The ‘Better Life Food Distribution’ event was operated by 140 LG Indonesia employees and volunteers the company’s partners, including BAPANAS, Universitas Prasetiya Mulya and FoodCycle Indonesia. To further support community welfare and sustainability efforts, LG and its partners donated a total of 1,500 waste-free meal kits and 1,500 bulgogi lunch boxes – made with the zero waste recipe created by Chef Devina Hermawan earlier in the campaign – to local welfare foundations.

Through this on-going campaign, LG Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to aiding the younger generation adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. The partnership will continue throughout the year with additional interactive activities geared toward Indonesian youth to amplify LG’s mission of providing a ‘Better life for all’ and promoting sustainable living.
Stay tuned to to discover the myriad of ways LG’s forward-thinking subsidiaries are promoting sustainable practices around the world.

      Hello,
I have a problem with the subtitles when I try to share a video wirelessly directly from my PC to my LG 55SM9010PLA TV. I am not talking about sharing the whole screen (it lags a bit), just the video itself.
Sharing the video itself works well, but randomly the TV randomly does not recognise the subtitle, the sub option is not active in the TV menu, and there are no subtitles. It is in the same folder on my PC as the movie (.mkv), with the same name. In case of some movies it works, in case of others not, and I do not see the reasons why.
First I tought it is becouse the format of the subtitle needs to be ".sub", becouse it worked with one movie. So I have learnt how to convert properly ".srt" to ".sub" - but still no success.
Then I realised, in the case of another movie ".srt" worked on the TV, so I got really confused.
I see no logic behind it.  Could you help me, what is the key here, what am I missing?
      Thank you!

Earth Day – celebrated annually on April 22 – is a great opportunity for people around all parts of the globe to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
      Shared earlier this week,
link hidden, please login to view an event with diverse activities highlighting the importance of sustainable practices. Let’s take a look at how other LG offices around the world shared the positive message of creating a ‘Better Life for All’ in time for Earth Day.
To start off in Germany, the company turned Earth Day into a week-long event through Earth Week on its online brand shop. From April 22 to 28, German consumers will receive a 10 percent discount on all LG household appliances with a green energy label purchased on , not only saving money but also energy at the same time.

LG Germany wanted to fully do its part to contribute to a more sustainable future, which is why it partnered with the local initiative , a non-profit association that advocates sustainable environment protection and nature conservation. As a part of this partnership, LG Germany will donate 10 percent of revenue from the energy efficient home appliances purchased between April 22-28 to the organization. Aligned with Herzenswald Schmitten’s mission, LG Germany proudly supports regional afforestation and providing newly planted trees with individual protection against poaching.

And, to boost sustainable practices within the company, LG Germany celebrated Earth Day in its Eschborn office. Employees received a reusable coffee cup, featuring the Life’s Good logo, reducing waste on single-use cups and even further promoting the brand message in public. Also, to motivate employees to reduce their carbon footprint, the company awarded employees who came to the office by either bike or public transportation with a voucher from a coffee bar located in the building – providing an opportunity for employees to use their brand new Life’s Good cups and spread the message. The company is excited to see how many employees make the morning bike ride their daily routine!

Reducing disposable wastes is an important task, one that LG’s headquarters in Korea is also paying great attention to. In time for this year’s Earth Day, LG CEO William Cho joined in on the “Zero Disposables Challenge,” a nation-wide environmental initiative launched by South Korea’s Ministry of Environment last year to encourage the use of reusable items in public. In line with this, the company called on all its employees to boost efforts to reduce the use of single-use products and increase the use of reusable products.

In Taiwan, the company deliberated on ways to make a difference for the planet through small daily actions. LG believes that doing one little thing every day has the power to have a great impact when accumulated over time.

To highlight this message, LG Taiwan unveiled a challenge on its official social media page, inviting users to reshare their Instagram story template, selecting what good things – no matter how big or small – they do to show that they love the earth! Running from April 22 to May 5, the company will select six winners who will receive a gift card.

Last but not least, LG Spain created a video outlining their on-going efforts to create a better planet. In the video shared via its social channels, the company introduces their Smart Green movement, an initiative that uses technology as a means to regenerate the ecosystem. The movement’s goals include ; to ensure the pollination of countless endemic plants; and restoring the seabed, which is home to thousands of plant and animal species. Already seeing great results, LG Spain reiterated its commitment to work with its local partners to change the world for the better.
LG believes Life’s Good but also understands that true enjoyment requires care and attention. The company is committed to not only crafting sustainable products but also to participating in initiatives that foster a better, cleaner future.

I have recently purchased a qned 99 and I can’t see how to close apps running in the back ground like I was able to do with other lg TVs I have.
The tv is running the latest version webos and obviously tried YouTube for the answer which only seems to say holding down the home button but all this seems to do is open the last app I was using.
      any ideas gratefully received.
