  1. LG Business Solutions recently introduced digital signage to Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport. In particular, the company provided an LED signage totem in Terminal B. Featuring up to 1,000 nits of brightness, the totem provides Russian cultural showcases, animated clock towers and advertisements, according to a press release. LG built a custom frame with an incorporated air cooling system for the totem and designed it so that each of the LED units had no visible gaps between them to craft a four-sided screen. The company provided other displays as well, including: Two digital art sculptures. 49-inch webOS display mounted on top of 86-inch 4K displays to provide airport information and advertising. 88-inch Ultra Stretch displays providing Russian culture vignettes. 49-inch webOS displays to guide customers to the check-in counters. Then you enter and see four luxurious chairs, complete with their own speaker systems. You take a seat by your assigned color that flashes above your seat on a huge curved OLED screen. Then the real fun begins. Forged out of a partnership between LG and Adient, LG’s connected self-driving car feels like something out of Minority Report. LG says this webOS-powered concept may not hit the market until 2030, but it was a thrill to check out the inside of this futuristic vehicle. Right at your seat there’s a rotating controller, complete with voice input and a touchscreen for adjusting your seat any way you want (including leaning all the way back.) There's also a tablet that swings up from the floor, complete with a privacy display so other passengers won’t see what you’re doing. In front of you — above the heads of the two passengers sitting across the way — is a large OLED screen that lets you pass the time on your way to your destination in several ways. You can fire up music that only you can hear via an 8-speaker sound system that’s built into the curved top of the seats. You can also watch movies or TV shows and even pick up right where you left off on your favorite show if you were viewing it at home. This is thanks to LG's AI and cloud prowess. What if the person next to you doesn’t want to watch what you do? You can digitally split the OLED screen in two. If you’re feeling a bit thirsty, you can just touch a sensor to reveal a rolling snack cart that emerges from between the seats. And if you decide to grab a soda can, the motion sensors in the vehicle will know it and automatically charge your payment card you used to book the ride. (If you decide to put it back, the payment is put back on your card.) There’s even a roll-out dry cleaner of sorts on board, in case you want to freshen your blazer or other garment on the way to your next meeting. You just hang it up and it goes to work. I know what you’re thinking. Can you even see the road ahead of you? Yes, via an augmented reality view you can activate on the OLED screen. This view can also show any traffic information. Now, a lot needs to happen between 2020 and 2030 for LG’s connected self-driving car concept to become a reality. But given all the fun distractions inside this vehicle I feel like I would be a little less nervous about how I get from point A to point B. And maybe even chill about it.   10. LG Electronics is partnering with TheTake, a video commerce technology company, to launch shoppable advertising on its webOS smart TVs. Beginning this spring, LG smart TV owners will be able to shop directly through content using TheTake’s proprietary technology that identifies and tags different products within episodes of television and movies. Along with LG, TheTake is also working with programmers including WarnerMedia, A+E Networks, Crown Media Family Networks, NBC Universal and others. “Shoppable video has been talked about since the days of Rachel’s sweater on ‘Friends,” said Tyler Cooper, co-founder and CEO of TheTake, in a statement. “Previous solutions haven’t addressed the long tail opportunity where each individual viewer wants to shop for something different. LG Electronics is taking a big leap, diving head-first into the car infotainment market with webOS Auto.   21. Android and iOS may currently dominate the smartphone operating system space, but a one-time rival is still alive and kicking. It’s just not designed to run on phones anymore. Last year LG released webOS Open Source Edition in an effort to bring the software to new platforms. And a series of recent updates have added support for new hardware and laid the groundwork for webOS OSE to be used in automotive systems as well as other types of products, WebOS began its life as a smartphone operating system developed by Palm. When HP acquired that company, tablet support was added. After the HP Touchpad tablet was a flop, HP abandoned its smartphone and tablet strategy (for a time) and sold webOS to LG, which has been using it as the foundation for its smart TV software ever since (as well as other smart devices including projectors and refrigerator). The operating system uses a Linux kernel and it’s known for introducing some key design elements that are widely used by mobile operating systems today including a card-based user interface. As for webOS Open Source Edition, it’s been under active development for the past year and a half or so, but it received a major update last month with the release of webOS OSE version 2.0. Among other things, version 2.0 added: A new touch-friendly reference user interface with a card-view Home Launcher Support for the Raspberry Pi 4 (which is now the default reference hardware) Dual-display support Firmware-Over-the-Air (FOTA) support Support for tethering (sharing an internet connection with other devices) Additional security enhancements and software updates The FOTA support is particularly interesting, since the release notes point out that it’s “becoming a requirement in the automotive context.” So the addition of support for delivering firmware updates in this way could help pave the way for webOS OSE to be used to power in-vehicle computer systems. This week, version 2.1 was released, with various other bug fixes and improvements. It’s a less exciting update, but coming a month after version 2.0, it does suggest that development is continuing at a decent pace. Sadly it does not appear that there are any official efforts to bring webOS back to smartphones or tablets… but there is another open-source project aiming to do that. LuneOS is a community driven project that’s been keeping the webOS mobile dream alive since 2014.   23. LG and Qualcomm announced plans to show off a new automotive infotainment platform running LG's webOS on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Automotive Development Platform (ADP). The new platform will run LG's Linux-based webOS Open Source Edition 2.0 and marks a new entrant into the auto OS space after Apple's Carplay and Google's Android Auto. LG has announced no specific details on how cars and drivers will benefit from webOS support, nor whether the system would operate in tandem with smartphones like Apple and Google products or as a standalone service. For its part, Qualcomm happily bragged of Snapdragon's capabilities in the car, including the power to drive high-res passenger and rear-seat entertainment displays with advanced graphics and ultra HD streaming provided by 5G networks. Smartphone fans remember webOS as the system that drove Palm's comeback Palm Pre devices, and was later passed among tech giants until it landed at LG running various devices including smart TVs and wearables.
