PreCentral: Quick App: Super Ads XL

Recommended Posts

Super Ads XL

There are two reasons why people watch the Super Bowl: the football and the commercials. For this year's Super Bowl XLVI, advertisers paid an average of $3.5 million for a 30-second spot during the game. If you missed any of those commercials or just want to check them out again, you can now find many of them online if you know where to look, or you can use your webOS smartphone or TouchPad.

Super Ads by Aclass Apps has been in the App Catalog for webOS smartphones for a while now and lets you browse the commercials from the last few Super Bowls (although the latest Super Bowl has yet to be added), but it now has a big brother with Super Ads XL for the TouchPad. Completely rewritten in Enyo for the tablet, Super Ads XL is $1.49 and features all the commercials from the last 4 Super Bowls in one easy-to-manage place. You simply tap on the Super Bowl you want to view, find the commercial you want, and play it, all within the app. You can also "favorite" commercials for quick-access later by tapping on the big star next to the commercial

Super Ads XL is missing a few features that were present in its Mojo phone-bound predecessor, such as sharing (email, SMS, Facebook, etc) and search, but we have been told that those updates are on the way. In addition, the developer has plans to add a Villo chat room and is taking the app cross-platform through the magic of open source Enyo. In fact, it's already in the Chrome App Store and has been approved for the Blackberry Playbook.

    • Question: Super slow internet (WiFi) when streaming

Hi, I recently bought an LG UK6500PLA TV (my first LG), but I have a difficult time streaming content (Wifi connected), e.g. Netflix series is streaming in low resolution.  The router is only 10 feet away from TV (but ethernet is not an option) and uses a 5GH frequency range. I have tried making a speed test at fast.com, for both the TV (through the Webbrowser) and for my laptop and iPhone. The speed test for TV showed 2.5 Mbps and my laptop and iPhone showed 110 Mbps. Can there really be such a big difference? I am starting to wonder if this might be a warranty issue? Do any of you guys have experience with bad Wifi reception on your LG TV or have any suggestions on how to fix it?    Br, Nick

    • Static Tone Mapping for 2017 OLED's (fix dim game HDR)

Please consider adding a new menu for 2017 OLED's  in HDR Game mode preset called "Static Tone Mapping" to picture options with a selection of 4000 nits (default) or 1000 nits. The reason so many complain about dim HDR on 2017 OLED's is down to an overly tone mapped image, game consoles HDR titles are mastered in 1000 nits range, LG's default tone mapping is set to 4000 nits and because the consoles do not send any HDR metadata, LG tone maps 1000 nits content to 4000 nits. We know this is the cause as advanced tools like HD Fury Vertex can trick the TV into thinking it's 1000 nits content and give correct looking HDR (very complex thing to setup far beyond normal users). This is entirely fixable by giving us a menu under game mode to force the TV to tone map to 1000 nits instead. If you read around online I'm almost certain this is what the special "Active HDR dynamic contrast = low" under Cinema mode does but this setting is not the same under any other preset.  Maybe the "Active HDR" trick is not possible under game mode but forcing the TV to 1000 nits tone mapping is because the HD Fury Vertex can do it so the TV has the capability. The 2018 models do not have this issue as they have "Dynamic Tone Mapping" under picture options so please throw us 2017 owners a bone on this, thanks. (Yes game consoles could possible fix this by sending metadata but that's unlikely).
