Some .jpg photos are not loading, only thumbnails.

Question

Posted

Hey, I have a LG OLED65CX TV (latest WebOS) and  some photos from my Synology NAS are not loading, only in thumbnails like this:

 spacer.png

Most photos work perfectly but some not. They are scans from a photobook and then individually cut in Zoner but that shouldn't matter right? Here are properties of one of the photos

I really don't know the reason my TV and it makes me really mad since it took a long time co scan these.

Weird thing is I also scanned other positive film photos and they work great on TV.

Do you know what might be the problem?

@OnlyCORE Have you checked that you have the latest firmware for your TV? It is 03.21 .18. See:

link hidden, please login to view
(you can download it on a PC, transfer to a USB stick - follow the README file for that).

Also check that your Synology NAS has the latest firmware and software app layers, and that the TV Internet connection is solid (i.e. LAN cable, or if WiFi check with a phone to see what the WiFi symbol (signal strength) shows for the band that the TV is using (i.e. 2.4GHz or 5GHz). If on 5GHz, check by logging into your router, go to WiFi Advanced settings, check that the CHANNEL within the 5GHz band is not higher than 100 (some TV's do not work well over 100), usually channel 36 or 44 works well.

TV, NAS and apps are all running the latest software.

TV is connected by cable and by strong 2.4 GHz connection (both, because screenshare from phone doesn't work over cable - another bullshit)

@OnlyCORE Thanks for the feedback.  I suspect you are using an Apple product for screen-share? If so, it is a common problem with the LAN connected devices, because some routers do not pass certain broadcast packets (initialization/negotiation data packets) between the WiFi and the Ethernet ports for the LAN side, for the AirPlay protocol to work properly. That is NOT the fault of the TV, it is usually the router firmware (a bug), or a security setting being too restrictive.

It may cause odd issues having BOTH LAN and WiFi connected to your TV at the same time, and if the WiFi 2.4GHz is working, then I would recommend you disconnect the LAN cable and retry your issue with the WiFi side only active.

FYI: the 2.4GHz band has a MAX throughput of 300Mbps, so if you DO have a dual-band router, AND the TV is close enough to the router for the 5GHz band to be strong, you can get much higher bandwidth via that (depending on your router model, and TV model, but I think around 900-1200Mpbs is common).

@td47 No Apples, only Android phones. My router is on another floor so 5GHz is very weak.

I tried disconnecting LAN cable but that made things worse. The TV couldn't see my NAS with only 2.4GHz connection.

I tried to copy some photos on an external drive and directly connect it to the TV and it couldn't show them either (like in the first picture) and also without thumbnails. So the problem on the  TV side.

What is wrong with these pictures? Every other device can show them without a problem.

@OnlyCORE Thanks for the feedback. Can you please clarify about the thumbnails. Is it correct that ALL of the JPG images DO get the thumbnail on the SmartShare player, but certain ones just fail to display, and show the "broken file" image?

If that is the case, can you please compare the properties of typical ones that DO display OK, with a few of those that don't? It may be that you have found a subtle limitation or bug in SmartShare, for instance the number of pixels, or the DPI, or even some other property, that the inbuilt player cannot handle (but other smarter photo viewers CAN workaround). The problem is that SmartShare has not been updated since 2018.

Is it possible that you can test any of the  failing ORIGINAL images that you have, prior to them being altered via Zoner? Do you have the latest build of Zoner? I see that ZPS now has build 315 dated 9th March 2021, so are you able to try that and "redo" a failing one from its original? If you are using an older 2019 version, I see that there was a bug fixed regarding the failure to write the DPI property properly into the image EXIFF so maybe Smartshare cannot render properly for those.

Thank you for your answers.

I'm not sure what SmartShare is but I'm using the Photo & Video app that was preinstalled and all the other photos are working even those also saved with the same version of Zoner but some scanned photos that were cut and saved are showing a broken picture. The all have the same DPI but different resolution since they were hand cut. Thumbnails are showing only when played from NAS, not directly from external HDD. Here are properties of some photos. The working ones are scans of positive film also edited and saved in Zoner. I'm not sure about the version as I don't have it on me. For sure it's not the latest version.

spacer.pngspacer.png

I tried opening one picture in Corel and saving it and it worked, but it cut the size by around 75% so loss of quality and I have hundreds of these photos. Is there another app on LG content store I can try if it's as you said old version from 2018?

EDIT:

I tried checking the metadata of different jpg files everything is the same apart from resolution and DPI but this:

All the working ones have Encoding Process: Baseline DCT and all the not working one have Encoding Process: Progressive DCT

Can this be the reason?

Yes, I think I spotted an article about Progressive Scan media having a limited resolution or pixel count on TV displays, so that could well be the issue, thanks for spotting that difference. If you can redo them with the latest Zoner version, and always use the Baseline encoding, that should provide better compatibility between display devices.

It’s an odd one, the LG doesn’t handle most things well, although in fairness it even played am MP4 video.....I tried viewing some JPGs saved with photoshop, PS has various save options one was progressive and another optimised, can’t remember exactly, but wanted to save with the best quality as had made some changes....Nb does t view Tiff files at all.....but these JPGs just would not view on my LGOLED55C9PLA .....had to re save as standard.....thought the LG should be more compatible.......but if I wanted a TV to do anything else than watch good quality TV / video I would have bought a Panasonic 🤯

I found the solution to this annoying issue.

Use the free photo editing program GIMP

Resize the image to 3840x2160 or anything that is exactly 16:9 aspect ratio

then File -> Export As -> change extension to jpeg or jpg

click Export up quality to 100

Uncheck Save IPTC

Click Advanced Options Uncheck Optimize Uncheck Progressive

Scroll Smoothing to 1.00

click Export

This should resolve the issue

i've updated an oled 42C3 to software version 33.22.80 and after this update some videos doesn't work anymore, last week no problem. I have other videos with the same format and codecs and work, so i don't have any idea what can be the issue.

      Hi All,
My TV will only display a good pisture when using 1080 sdr 30hz. Anything different and certain content will appear washed out, blue or green tint on setup and streaming pages. I believe my TV is connected correctly as the picture is fine so long as it is 1080 sdr. Thoughts?
      Thanks in advance

My 65UQ70 TV started to ignore my remote yesterday. After some experiments I've found that it only reacts to double clicks now. So I have to use double clicks for any action - move through menus, launch apps etc, single clicks are just ignored.
Resetting the TV to factory settings didn't help.
I tried to google the issue and found that this might be an issue with the remote, but I can't find how to reset the remote of my model. Combinations like Home+Back (for Magic Remote) or 2+8 (for some old style remotes) don't work for my model, neither removing batteries and pressing all buttons does.
My remote seems to be AKB76040302, a photo from the Internet is below.
So, how do I reset it?
      Some other things to mention:
      - The pulses of the remote are not visible through a cell phone camera, so I couldn't check if it only sends signals to the TV after double clicks, or the TV is enforcing this issue. UPDATE: a cellphone sees the pulses in darkness, and a pulse is sent on each press, not only on doubles. So it should be TV OS issue, not the remote issue.
      - This started to happen after I have updated the software and connected a sound bar with optical cable, though I believe the last action isn't related to the issue.

With Uncompromised, Low-Lag Performance at 4K 144Hz, LG’s Advanced Wireless
Technology Sets a New Standard for Clutter-Free Gaming and Home Cinema

SEOUL, July 3, 2025 — LG Electronics (LG) has announced the global rollout of its newest wireless OLED TV series, the LG OLED evo M5 – a TV that combines LG’s advanced True Wireless technology1 with the industry-leading OLED picture quality of the G52 to reimagine the TV experience in a clutter-free setup.
The M5 sets a new gold standard for premium wireless home entertainment. LG’s True Wireless technology eliminates the cable connection between the TV and external devices, thanks to LG’s proprietary Zero Connect Box,3 a visually lossless wireless video and audio transmission solution. Delivering ultra-smooth content with low input lag up to 4K 144Hz,4 the M5 boasts performance on par with a wired connection.
The M5 offers next-level wireless technology for competitive gamers demanding ultra-responsive performance. Building on the legacy of LG’s OLED evo series, the M series is the only wireless TV compatible with both NVIDIA G-SYNC® and AMD FreeSync Premium to deliver a tear-free, stutter-free gaming experience even during fast-paced action up to 4K 144Hz. Certified by Intertek for Qualified Gaming Performance, the M5 features an ultra-fast response time of less than 0.1ms,5 delivering smooth, vibrant visuals in razor-sharp clarity.
The M5 is the optimal TV for those seeking both a superb gaming experience and a more flexible, cleaner setup. A conventional TV offers multiple ports for commonly used HDMI devices like gaming consoles on the back of the screen, causing viewers to walk to the TV to power on devices or switch inputs. But on the M5, these ports can be found on the Zero Connect Box, enabling consoles to be placed within reach – on a nearby shelf, inside a cabinet, or next to the sofa. As a result, there are no cables between the TV and entertainment devices.
The M5 is also a top-tier choice for home cinema enthusiasts, featuring Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and Filmmaker® Mode with Ambient Light Compensation for cinematic accuracy. Powered by the α (Alpha) 11 AI Processor Gen2, it offers enhanced depth and detail with AI Picture Pro, while AI Sound Pro enables immersive 11.1.2-channel audio. LG’s upgraded Brightness Booster Ultimate technology boosts screen brightness by up to three times compared to conventional OLED models.6 The M5 has also received UL Solutions’ “Perfect Black” and “Perfect Color” verification, along with certifications from Intertek for 100 percent color fidelity and 100 percent color volume. A “Perfect” grade by TÜV Rheinland7 further affirms the M5’s capability to maintain clarity even in bright indoor conditions.
With a flush-fit design and no visible cable clutter, the LG OLED evo M5 delivers a truly immersive entertainment experience with the uncompromised performance of a wired setup.
“For 12 consecutive years, LG has led the global OLED TV market and we are opening a new era of television with our leadership in wireless TV,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Media Entertainment Solution Company. “The OLED evo M5 exemplifies our commitment to innovation and our pursuit of the ultimate in premium home entertainment.”
The LG OLED evo M5 series will roll out globally in 97, 83, 77 and 65-inch screen sizes. To discover more about LG’s wireless OLED TVs, visit

3 The TV and the Zero Connect Box each plug into the wall for power.
4 LG 2025 OLED M5 series TVs up to 83 inches (screen size) provide support for 4K@144Hz. The 97-inch OLED M5 supports 4K@120Hz.
5 LG OLED displays been certified as “0.1 response times (Gray to Gray)” and “Qualified Gaming Performance” by Intertek.
6 Applies to 65/77/83-inch M5 models, compared to the same sizes of conventional OLED models (B5 series) in a 10 percent window.
7 LG 2025 65-inch M5 has received TÜV certification for True Visual Experience with Indoor lighting. True Visual Experience certification by TÜV means that the product achieved the highest grade “Perfect” in all five metrics for ambient visual quality (blackness, vividness, perceptual contrast length, gradation precision and ambient contrast modulation) when tested in accordance with IDMS 11.5 Ring-light Reflection standards up to 500lux.

      Greetings.
A huge problem is connecting an external drive/flash drive to a TV with webos with a large number of files.
It starts scanning all folders, which can take up to 20 minutes. Which is unacceptably long.
On the netcast platform, everything was instant. Maybe it creates previews...maybe something else...
How to disable disk scanning by the webos platform?
