Pause/record using SSD drive

Steve Marks

Question

Having read advice on this site I bought a WD 2.5" SSD plus USB adapter so that I could pause and record FreeSAT which is built-in to the TV.  Is there a particular way to set up the drive and if so how?  I've plugged the drive in and can connect to it via Settings but it only offers the options of using media stored on the drive to be shown on screen.  I want to pause live TV and record it.  Does anyone know if this can be done please?

@Steve Marks Please post the LG TV model you have, and what country you are in. They don't all support the "Time Machine" in-built app, and in some countries (like Italy), LG have not paid the licence to use the feature for recording broadcast TV programmes.  NOTE: even if you get this working (if your TV supports this), you CANNOT take those recordings off that device, to use on another TV or PC for example (or plug the SSD into another device), they are in a proprietary format, and NOT portable, for copyright and DRM reasons.  Google DRM to see the implications.

If you want to "pause live TV AND record programmes", you may need to get a set-top-box and add a disk to that, OR get a SKY  or FOXTEL box or similar, depending on your country. These can be as cheap as $39 (you have to add your own disk at the front):

or a big brand with its own 1TB disk, and better functionality for around $400 here:

@Steve Marks Thanks for confirming the model is an LG UK model 43LM6300PLA

At

shows under "Additional Feature" it shows Time Machine and other DVR related stuff:

Additional Feature
    Time Machine (DVR):    Yes
    Digital Recording:    Yes
    Analog DVR:        Yes
    Time Shift:        Yes

So, in theory this COULD be done, BUT you mention FreeSat. I am not familiar with this, only FreeView+ HBB stuff. Have you tried the normal antenna FTA (digital Freeview+) channels from the normal antenna? Those certainly work on my Australian LG 55UB850T. Can you tune those in, and recheck if you can set up (initialise) the HDD disk for Time Machine use?

I wish I could control the volume of my LG TV 65NANO96SNA (webOS 4.50.71) using Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation (tvOS 17.3) with HDMI CEC (Belkin AV10176bt2M-BLK cable). The Apple TV has it on Settings, however, the TV does not respond to it. Turn on/off works. Volume control only works with IR. Could we prepare an update to support and fix it?

Hi,  I have an LG 43UN71006LB with OS v4.50.53 (latest)

I want to buy a TV for my mother who has dementia & poor eyesight.

She needs to be able to control the TV with Alexa - i.e. voice only without having to hold a button on a remote down.
I thought I'd test this on my TV and it works very well.  I've even set "routines" on Alexa so that saying "Alexa, BBC 1" is a shortcut for "Alex, change the channel on LGTV to 101" etc.

But - it doesn't work for radio channels (channel 704 is BBC Radio 4):
"Alexa, change channel on LGTV to 101" - works perfectly (101 = BBC 1 - a TV channel)
"Alexa, change channel on LGTV to 705" - "that command doesn't work on device LGTV"

It basically won't work with any of the radio channels (700 to 790)
      Also tried:
"Alexa, change channel on LGTV to BBC RADIO 4" - "hmm - I don't know that"
"Alexa, play BBC Radio 4 on LGTV" - "I didn't find anything called LGTV that can play music"

I thought I'd try to change 704 to another channel outside of the 700 to 790 range but when I tried:
"The programme number cannot be edited between programme 700 to 790"

I tried playing the Radio on the Alexa then using Sound Share to turn the TV into a Bluetooth speaker - this works really well - except that I can't turn Sound Share on using Alexa:

"Alexa, enable Sound Share on LGTV"  - "that command doesn't work on device LGTV"

      Anyone have any ideas?

I have an LG65UR80006LJ and when I plug my portable hard drive in to one of the USB ports, it lights up and sometimes the thumbnail folder gets added by the TV (I can see it when I plug the drive back into my PC) and twice now it has operated as expected and it appears as a device on the media app.
But it has only worked correctly twice and now doesn't find the drive at all, despite me having reformatted it and only add one file to the root directory (the first page if this makes sense; not buried in sub folders.)
Before I box the TV back up and send it back, is there anything else I need/can do as my 12 year old Philips smart tv has no problems what so ever finding the drive and playing the media on it?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Company Has Established a Comprehensive, Ethically-Responsible
Management System for Its AI-Enabled Home Appliances

SEOUL, Feb. 15, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) has recently achieved a significant milestone by obtaining the AI Management System (AIMS) certification (ISO/IEC 42001) from the Korean Standards Association (KSA).1 This certification demonstrates LG’s commitment to prioritizing data security and embracing responsible AI management practices throughout the entire lifecycle of its AI-powered home appliances.
ISO/IEC 42001, a globally recognized standard established jointly by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), sets out the essential requirements for governing and managing AI technologies.2 AIMS certification validates that a company has not only implemented but also maintains and continuously improves an AI Management System, demonstrating a responsible and ethical approach to developing and utilizing AI-based solutions.
The stringent assessment criteria of ISO/IEC 42001 cover various aspects, including AI policy formulation, risk assessment, risk management, ethical compliance, regulatory responsiveness and transparency in AI management processes.
The acquisition of AIMS certification acknowledges LG’s ongoing and systematic efforts to ensure rigorous control over potential issues related to its AI products and services, including security, fairness, transparency and accountability. Through this certification, LG aims to enhance customer trust and strengthen its competitiveness.
Last year, LG distinguished itself as the first home appliance manufacturer to receive Deep Learning AI Verification, awarded by the independent safety science company UL for its washing machine and dryer. Additionally, LG obtained AI Safety Certification from the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) for the AI functionalities integrated into the LG WashTower.3
LG actively leverages data- and AI-based research and development initiatives to realize the vision of the ‘Zero Labor Home,’ offering users a refreshingly convenient and relaxing smart home experience facilitated by LG’s advanced, AI-driven home appliances and services.
“This certification shows that we have established a comprehensive AI management system and are committed to providing our customers with safe, responsible AI-based solutions for a better life,” said Lyu Jae-chul, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company.
