Happy Halloween! The long wait is finally over #LuneOS and #webOS fans! We’re back with a new release called “Eggnog Latte” which is a milestone in terms of developments and paves the way forward!

So you’re wondering what we’ve been up to since our previous stable release at the end of last year?

We have done many major upgrades to a large number of components of our stack being:

  • Migration of Open webOS to webOS OSE components.

We are in terms of the migration of old to their .

This was a monumental task due to the fact that webOS OSE code was released without any history. So every component needed to be analyzed to understand what was changed in the years of development inside of LG Electronics. Our custom changes needed to be re-assessed and re-implemented into the new components where applicable. A change of direction in certain aspects in terms of architecture made the whole exercise even more complicated. We do however believe that we’re in a good state now in terms of migration. There are still quite some components to migrate and we’ll get through that in the next releases.
  • Qt:

We migrated from Qt 5.11.3 to Qt 5.12.5 which included an update for Chromium from 65 to 69 amongst other improvements.
  • Yocto upgrade:

We upgraded from the no longer supported Yocto Pyro release, via the intermediary Rocko, Sumo and Thud releases to the latest Yocto release called Warrior.

We have been working closely together with the Halium, Mer and PostMarketOS projects and have made further integrations between LuneOS and the various projects reducing duplication between the projects and using a single source where possible. This all to be more easily integrated, and to facilitate ports to newer and more devices. We have also worked on support for devices which use a mainline kernel instead of an Android based kernel.. We also have been testing with the Nexus 5 (hammerhead) using a mainline kernel. All our setup has now been adjusted so we can work with both Android based targets and kernels as well as mainline kernels.

LG has a very clear vision in mind for webOS OSE as can be read on . Since the initial release of webOS OSE 1.0 in March last year, there has been a total of 11 releases of webOS OSE already with a lot of improvements and added features added with each release. This month LG has released with a lot of new features and also .

The following items on our to-do list will be where we focus next:

  • Migration of remaining Open webOS components to the newer webOS OSE components and assess where further synergies could be achieved.
  • Migrate to Yocto Zeus release.
  • Update to Qt 5.13.
  • Migrate Nexus 5 (hammerhead) to use mainline kernel.
  • Finalize port for Pinephone.
  • Work on support for Halium 8/9/10 in order to support newer targets.
  • Messaging improvements.
  • Camera improvements.
  • Fix known issues on the various targets.
  • Bring back official support for Touchpad 4G (current build works on Touchpad 4G but only WiFi).

Known issues:

  • Node-SQLite3 is currently not working. Components using Node-SQLite3 have switched to an alternative storage method for now.
  • Telephony not working on the Xiaomi Android 7 based targets. We have found the root cause, but haven’t been able to solve it yet.
  • Virtual Keyboard sometimes randomly doesn’t appear.

Feel free to to get started. Tenderloin, Hammerhead and Tissot remain our focus for now, but the emulators, Mako and Mido work too.

Please note that in order to use the latest stable builds Nexus 4 (Mako) and Nexus 5 (Hammerhead) you need to flash the CM 12.1 images first using CWM/TWRP. In order to do so, you might be required to do a “factory reset” or at least “wipe cache”. CWM/TWRP will indicate when this is needed. After successfully flashing CM 12.1, make sure to boot it at least once before going back to CWM/TWRP to flash the latest LuneOS image! We have provided links to CM 12.1 for these 3 images on our device pages below.

      Hi,

My LG Smart WebOS TV recently got a burned image on the screen for 2 hours now. I don't have an option to refresh the pixels on the screen to clear this through options. What options do I have to clear this up?

My TV has stopped recognising the live TV signal from the aerial since the OS updated recently. The aerial works fine when plugged into other devices but when plugged into the TV it doesn’t recognise the signal for days on end. When this happens, it will no longer allow me to do a signal test via the settings (the option is greyed out). I’m guessing it’s either a) a problem with the input (hardware) or; b) a problem with the OS (software).

      Hello,
I got a 55UJ6519-ZA and wanted to install the Discoveryplus app on it, but it is not available in the content store.
I found that version webOS 4.0 (or higher) is required for Discoveryplus, but my TV is running version 3.9.0-62907

Any chance the 55UJ6519-ZA will get an webOS-update to 4.0?

Organizational Moves to Consolidate Company’s Capabilities to Create
Differentiated Customer Value, Accelerate Future Growth Engines

SEOUL, Nov. 24, 2022 — LG Electronics (LG) today announced organizational changes designed to bolster its preparedness for the future. The changes are being implemented primarily to accelerate the company’s future growth engines and enhance its ability to create differentiated customer value and experiences.
A key piece of LG’s forward-looking strategy is the establishment of the Corporate Customer Experience (CX) Center, which will report directly to LG’s headquarters. The CX Center will be led by executive vice president, Lee Chul-bae, who previously served as head of the Corporate Design Management Center. The main role of the CX Center will be to create a seamless and expanded customer experience. It will also develop strategies and roadmaps to foster greater innovation at every stage of the customer experience journey from product planning and customer service to future business models.
The CX Center will also encompass the CX Strategy Division, which will be charged with the discovery and promotion of company-wide goals and core tasks, and the LSR Customer Research Center, formerly the Life Soft Research (LSR) Lab.
LG’s Platform Business Center will play a new role in integrating and organizing LG ThinQ services, responsibilities that were previously distributed across corporate and business headquarters. Established in July 2021, the Platform Business Center has been leading the creation of LG’s fandom based on data. Moving forward, the Center will be headed by LG’s vice president, Jung Ki-hyun, who joined the company in September this year. Jung has had a distinguished career with roles at eBay Korea and Google as well as acting as the CEO of Meta Korea.
In 2023 and beyond, LG will continue to focus on improving supply chain management (SCM) and augmenting its already-strong Digital Transformation (DX) capabilities. To this end, the company’s Procurement and SCM Management Center has been renamed the Global Operation Center, with the functions and roles of the Production Planning Division transferred from the Production Engineering Research Institute. The Global Operation Center will create synergies across the company’s operations – such as production, purchasing and SCM – through promoting improvements based on DX technologies.
Aiming to spur further growth through improved organizational performance, LG will strengthen its agile and responsive decision-making system across all four business units.
Lyu Jae-cheol, head of the Home Appliance & Air Solution (H&A) Company, has been promoted to president in recognition of his success in improving H&A’s performance and product portfolio. An expert in his field, Lyu has worked in various areas of LG’s home appliance business since 1989, including in the R&D and production departments.
Eun Seok-hyun, head of the Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Company, was promoted to vice president. Under his leadership, LG’s vehicle component solutions business has achieved operational stability with an improved profit and loss structure, and has constructed a strong business portfolio encompassing several key future mobility technologies.
Another of the newly-announced changes, the H&A Company’s “Living Appliance Business’ and “Kitchen Appliance Business” will become the “Living Solution Business” and “Kitchen Solution Business,” respectively. The renaming aligns with LG’s renewed focus on customer experience innovation and points to the greater emphasis the company is placing on the expansion of content and services.
The Home Entertainment (HE) Company is set to increase its capacity to create customer value by establishing the Indonesia Research and Development Division under the HE R&D Lab Institute to enhance collaboration between overseas R&D and manufacturing bases.
The VS Company aims to strengthen its capabilities in purchasing, producing and SCM by establishing an operation group that manages the integrated operation of the electric vehicle component business.
The Business Solutions (BS) Company set up a new EV Charger Business Division directly under the company to accelerate the full-fledged development of EV charging solution business that was launched last year.
All appointments are effective Dec. 1 with promotions going into effect on the first day of the new year.
