Each year, millions of home appliances reach the end of their operational lifespans and are taken away for disposal.* However, their story doesn’t have to finish there. Through transformative processes and technologies, these discarded devices can be reborn as brand-new appliances, offering features and performance tailored to the needs and preferences of today’s consumers.
Let’s explore how old appliances are being turned into up-to-date and environmentally-conscious living solutions by one of the leading innovators in the home appliance industry.
Urban Mining: Unearthing New Resources From Discarded Appliances
‘Urban mining’ means extracting valuable resources from ‘retired’ household appliances. It involves recovering and sorting any raw materials that can be used in the creation of new products. Unlike incineration – a fate that befalls many disused appliances – this course of action helps reduce carbon emissions and prevent environmental pollution. An active urban miner, LG extracts several different materials from discarded appliances – including plastic, iron and non-ferrous metals – and then uses them to help produce its advanced, new offerings.
LG Recycling Center: Giving New Life to Old Appliances
Since the end of 2021, LG has been implementing resource circulation programs in a total of 52 countries worldwide as part of its extensive efforts to combat greenhouse gas emissions. At the LG Recycling Center in South Korea, which commenced operations in 2001, raw materials are harvested from disposed-of home appliances, meticulously sorted and processed before being made into ‘fresh’ eco-responsible appliance components.
Here are the four main steps taken at the LG Recycling Center that make it possible to turn old appliances into high-quality parts for new products.
Step 1: Collection – Used appliances such as refrigerators, washers and air conditioners are collected and transported to the center.
Step 2: Disassemble and Crush – The appliances are taken apart, and the components are crushed to achieve a consistent size.
Step 3: Sorting and Processing – After iron, aluminum, copper and plastic materials have been sorted, the plastics are put through an additional process where they are made into pellets; a convenient and renewable resource for the manufacturing of plastic parts and goods.
Step 4: Rebirth – The pellets are melted and transformed into plastic parts for use in the production of new LG home appliances.
Recycled Plastics: Giving Life to LG’s Captivating Designs
Recycled plastics play an important role in bringing the captivating designs of LG’s home appliances to life, including those of the recently launched LG Styler ShoeCare and ShoeCase. The LG PuriCare AeroFurniture air purifier and the LG tiiun mini, which come in an array of vibrant colors to enliven the home, also employ recycled plastics. Used in the construction of both products’ exteriors, these repurposed materials contribute to the aesthetic appeal of LG’s innovations and help reduce resource consumption and waste.
A Continuous Virtuous Cycle for the Planet and Consumers
LG has fully embraced a ‘Sustainable Cycle’ approach, building eco-consciousness into every stage of the home appliance lifecycle, from production and packaging to usage and recycling. The company continues to utilize recycled materials extracted and processed at the CRC in the manufacture of new appliances – appliances that minimize power consumption and emissions, and are themselves highly recyclable. In this way, LG has created a virtuous cycle that simultaneously benefits the planet and consumers.
Stepping up its efforts even further, LG plans to reach a cumulative total of 600,000 tons of recycled plastics (for producing home appliance components) by the beginning of the next decade. The ambitious target is set out in the company’s ‘Better Life Plan 2030,’ and also forms part of LG’s broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality.
Also by 2030, LG estimates it will have recovered 8 million tons of out-of-use appliances for the purpose of extracting recycled materials.
By implementing initiatives such as proper product disposal and the extraction of materials from discarded products, LG is able to create something new from something old, showing how a firm commitment to people and the planet can help make a better life for all.

Premier of “Among the Sky” Infused With LG OLED and Lifestyle TVs
During Frieze New York From May 17 to 21
SEOUL, May 18, 2023 — LG Electronics (LG) announced today another breakthrough collaboration with
link hidden, please login to view (Ezequiel Pini b. 1985), an award-winning Argentinian designer and digital artist based in Barcelona. Over the last decade, Pini has increasingly explored how 3D tools and software can be used in his artistic practice to create imaginary, dreamlike worlds whose aesthetic is at once modernist, contemporary and, above all, elegant. The collaborative exhibition Among the Sky, which includes six specially commissioned artworks presented on large-scale format LG OLED and Lifestyle Screens, is being launched and exhibited during Frieze New York during a private preview held at The Shed May 15-16, and during the fair from May 17-21. LG OLED Arts’ collaboration with Six N. Five highlights a continuing and concerted effort in bringing together the world of digital art and advanced technology by presenting contemporary art experiences through LG OLED screens to inspire new and changing forms of the platform and broadening the ways viewers can and will experience visual culture. With premium self-lit picture quality and powerful image processing technologies, LG OLED TVs elevate the viewing and user experience in digital art display.
“We believe that LG OLED will break through the limitations of conventional media and open up the possibilities for digital art and artists,” said Kate Oh, vice president of the Brand Communication Division at the LG Home Entertainment Company. “In accordance with our motto, We inspire art, LG OLED will inspire many artists as they advance into new forms of art, transcending the borders of different fields. We could not be more excited in working with the most talented digital native artists – such as Six N. Five who understand this space.”
The series of six newly commissioned works, Among the Sky are inspired by landscape paintings, expressionism and fantasy realms of the surrealist masters but whose practice draws on digital tools of digital artwork to produce animate vignettes that blur the distinction between natural and outer worldly expressions – one physical and the other, digital. Through this unique collaboration with LG OLED and LG Art Lab, each work can be seen and experienced viscerally in the physical world while also being made available across purely large-scale, digital platforms. LG’s state-of-the-art OLED evo TVs accurately reproduce the textures and colors of the work and deliver exceptionally immersive images, offering higher brightness, clarity and detail. It is also an important aspect through such collaborations to pave the way and bridge the gap between Web 2.0 to Web 3.0 user experiences.
“The sky has no boundaries. Its immensity has always represented a sacred journey beyond perceived limits to me. The world as we know and experience has a finite horizon. It is broken when our vision is raised to connect with the sky,” shares Six N. Five. “For some, it proposes the connection to the beyond, to our divine and spiritual essence. We look up there when we ask for things, when we seek an explanation or simply when we decide to “end” the verticality of our bodies to allow us a physical and mental rest, surrounded by nature.”
The six series of works by Six N. Five will be available as NFTs (Non-Fungible Token) via LG Art Lab on May 25 at 12:00 AM EDT and also be exhibited during Frieze New York from May 17-21, 2023 at The Shed 8th Floor, Tisch Skylights located at 545 W 30th Street, New York, NY. The exhibition is co-curated by Ezequiel Pini and Derrick Li, and supported by Triple X.

Question
Robert S
I am trying to convert so very old VHS video tapes to digital, these are private tapes of a wedding.
I have tried to used VHS player to USB capture device but the quality is awful, but when you watch the video it looks okay. Then I found that if I put a USB hard drive into the TV I could record the AV1 input, it says it saved as an AAC file.
But when I plug the drive into a PC there is an lg_dvr folder but no aac files.
Am I missing something? how can I play these files away from the TV? This is the best quality recording from an old VHS I have seen and would make this process of copying all the old VHS tapes so much easier.
Any help /guidance appreciated.
