[pivotCE]Open Source webOS now brought to you by LG

Yo! We heard you like open sourced webOS so LG open sourced the open source of webOS!

Ok, so that’s not entirely accurate since LG purchased the closed source webOS code from HP after they open sourced…well…bits and pieces of it back in 2012. So no, you’re not stuck in a Doctor Strange time loop.

webOS has been open sourced before but not by LG.  This news comes as a shock to the current legacy webOS community still rocking Pre 3s and waiting for LuneOS to reach “driver” status.  The community hasn’t poured through the code as of yet but it immediately begs certain questions:

  1. Will the work on LuneOS be helped or hindered by additional LG open source code which LG had already been committing too for some time (though they have missed some of their promised bits for a while)?
  2. What hardware limitations are there for use of the software? Still looking for that webOS toaster
  3. How flexible (read: portable) is it?
  4. How complete is it?  HP’s open source webOS was decidedly incomplete…

We’ll keep you updated on the developments on this as they become available.  For now, the conversation has started on the forums so feel free to chime in.

    • Question: webOs TV not functioning well

My LG webOS TV was diagnosed with a busted Main Board. The local service center replaced it. After replacing with a new main board some problems were observed; 1. It will shut-off and switch back on a minute after switching on. Sometimes after 2 minutes it will switch-off and back. 2. HDMI1 and HDMI2 ARC is not working anymore. 3. It cannot connect to WIFI anymore also. Is their a way to make it work again?

    • Question: OLED55C8: Can I have a different source on power up?

I just got an OLED55C8. I won't have a cable or antenna connection to it, nor will I have any other devices physically connected to it. So there are no input sources to choose from. Everything I view will be coming through WiFi. Whenever I turn on the TV, it comes on with the TV source selected. And because I have no signal sources connected to it I get a random noise picture and sound. If the volume was up high on the previous viewing, the random noise is pretty loud. It can be pretty jarr

    • Netflix on WebOS Browser

We want to watch netflix on the browser not the app. The login page appears but when we click on the Play button a screen appears talking about HTML5 and Silverlight. We know what HTML5 and Silverlight are but find it strange that the WebOS browser does not support this markup language on its player. Oddly YouTube works fine in the browser. Does anybody know how to get the WebOS browser to run HTML5?
