PreCentral: McKinney: HP was supposed to leave Palm alone for three years, lacked the "patience for innovation"

Recommended Posts

Phil McKinney

Phil McKinney left his position as HP CTO and chief big thinker at the end of this past October. Since then he published a new book, Beyond the Obvious: Killer Questions That Spark Game-Changing Innovation [hardcover, Kindle, iBooks] that explores his experience as an innovator. In promoting Beyond the Obvious, McKinney sat down for an interview with "strategic marketing expert" and fellow author Rick Mathieson. Most of the interview touches on what's in McKinney's book, but in part four of the interview he steers the discussion towards what went down with webOS and McKinney's last few months at HP. We'll let McKinney do the talking here:

"[The Palm acquisition] was going to be a long term effort. Palm was struggling and HP was stepping in, doing the acquisition, and we were basically going to take three years hands-off. Palm was basically going to get cash infusions, resources, and expertise. But Palm was going to be given three years to basically get itself positioned to be a market leader in its space. Now, fast forward to July of 2011 and, one, you had a swap out of the CEOs - Leo comes in as the new CEO - and HP, for whatever reason - I was not a part of this decision - made the decision to kill it, one year into the three year program. This is an example of not committing long term to the resources and not having patience for innovation."

McKinney notes that he was part of the team that drove the acquisition of Palm and that there are always challenges to overcome with trying to get a large organization like HP to be innovative. As the existence of a three-year plan for Palm implies, the challenge is sticking to a long-term plan that ignores the quarterly financial reports in favor of the long view.

It's equal parts hard and frustrating to imagine where Palm and webOS would be today had HP not pulled the plug on hardware development and essentially killed (and since attempted to revived) the OS. It's been seven months since former HP CEO Leo Apotheker made the decision to kill webOS hardware, and during that time we expect that we would have at the very least seen the release of the HP Pre3 and TouchPad Go, plus whatever else HP might have been working up.

For his part, McKinney still uses a webOS smartphone and a TouchPad.

I like webos on my TV, but there are only two small anoying details that would be great if there is a way around it.
      1. TV in Portugal Vodafone has still Cable and Antenna channels. Scanning is not a problem and quality is acceptable for the source. Those channels because they are analogue will not gain description and only show the frequency name such as "S34". Is there any way to rename the channel to something more human readable such as "RTP1" ?
      2. Adding a bookmark from the web browser to the main screen works like a charm, but is there any way when lauching the bookmark from there in FullScreen and it doesn't show the intire browser ?
      thanks

Happy Halloween! The long wait is finally over #LuneOS and #webOS fans! We’re back with a new release called “Eggnog Latte” which is a milestone in terms of developments and paves the way forward!
So you’re wondering what we’ve been up to since our previous stable release at the end of last year?
We have done many major upgrades to a large number of components of our stack being:
Migration of Open webOS to webOS OSE components.

We are almost half way there in terms of the migration of old Open webOS components to their webOS OSE replacements.

This was a monumental task due to the fact that webOS OSE code was released without any history. So every component needed to be analyzed to understand what was changed in the years of development inside of LG Electronics. Our custom changes needed to be re-assessed and re-implemented into the new components where applicable. A change of direction in certain aspects in terms of architecture made the whole exercise even more complicated. We do however believe that we’re in a good state now in terms of migration. There are still quite some components to migrate and we’ll get through that in the next releases.
      Qt:

We migrated from Qt 5.11.3 to Qt 5.12.5 which included an update for Chromium from 65 to 69 amongst other improvements.
      Yocto upgrade:

We upgraded from the no longer supported Yocto Pyro release, via the intermediary Rocko, Sumo and Thud releases to the latest Yocto release called Warrior.
We have been working closely together with the Halium, Mer and PostMarketOS projects and have made further integrations between LuneOS and the various projects reducing duplication between the projects and using a single source where possible. This all to be more easily integrated, and to facilitate ports to newer and more devices. We have also worked on support for devices which use a mainline kernel instead of an Android based kernel. As you might have seen, we have been working on support for the Pinephone which uses a mainline kernel. We also have been testing with the Nexus 5 (hammerhead) using a mainline kernel. All our setup has now been adjusted so we can work with both Android based targets and kernels as well as mainline kernels.
LG has a very clear vision in mind for webOS OSE as can be read on their blog posts. Since the initial release of webOS OSE 1.0 in March last year, there has been a total of 11 releases of webOS OSE already with a lot of improvements and added features added with each release. This month LG has released webOS OSE 2.0.0 with a lot of new features and also a new roadmap.
The following items on our to-do list will be where we focus next:
Migration of remaining Open webOS components to the newer webOS OSE components and assess where further synergies could be achieved. Migrate to Yocto Zeus release. Update to Qt 5.13. Migrate Nexus 5 (hammerhead) to use mainline kernel. Finalize port for Pinephone. Work on support for Halium 8/9/10 in order to support newer targets. Messaging improvements. Camera improvements. Fix known issues on the various targets. Bring back official support for Touchpad 4G (current build works on Touchpad 4G but only WiFi). Known issues:
Node-SQLite3 is currently not working. Components using Node-SQLite3 have switched to an alternative storage method for now. Telephony not working on the Xiaomi Android 7 based targets. We have found the root cause, but haven’t been able to solve it yet. Virtual Keyboard sometimes randomly doesn’t appear. Changelog

Feel free to download the updated builds to get started. Tenderloin, Hammerhead and Tissot remain our focus for now, but the emulators, Mako and Mido work too.
Please note that in order to use the latest stable builds Nexus 4 (Mako) and Nexus 5 (Hammerhead) you need to flash the CM 12.1 images first using CWM/TWRP. In order to do so, you might be required to do a “factory reset” or at least “wipe cache”. CWM/TWRP will indicate when this is needed. After successfully flashing CM 12.1, make sure to boot it at least once before going back to CWM/TWRP to flash the latest LuneOS image! We have provided links to CM 12.1 for these 3 images on our device pages below.
Installation instructions for TouchPad (Tenderloin), Nexus 4 (Mako), Nexus 5 (Hammerhead) and Emulator are on the wiki. And remember we don’t do timelines.
Don’t forget to contact us with any questions and feel free to join the discussion on the webOS Nation forums. Catch us on Twitter @webosports on IRC: Freenode:#webos-ports or email [email protected]
We will see you shortly again with a new release!

The chipmaker owns several patents related to Palm and webOS, and is accusing the iPhone X of copying its user interface.

The Palm Pre was one of many purported "iPhone killers" that never stuck. But it still has its fans.

The legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm just went retro.
The same day that Apple filed a countersuit against Qualcomm, alleging that the chipmaker illegally used Apple battery management technology in Snapdragon processors that went into rival phones, Qualcomm filed three new complaints relating to 16 additional patents against Apple, including asking for the iPhone X to be banned.
But Qualcomm is bringing up a blast from the past in its complaint: the cult classic Palm Pre.
It turns out, Qualcomm in 2014 purchased several patents from Palm, including technology relating to its webOS operating system and user interface. While the Palm Pre, which debuted in 2009 as the purported "iPhone killer," never met the initial hype, Qualcomm is bringing it back as a weapon against Apple.
Watch this: Qualcomm now seeks a ban on some Apple iPhone Xs 1:33  This is the latest wrinkle in the escalating fight between the two tech giants. Apple is one of the largest consumer technology companies in the world, with arguably the strongest brand in the industry, while Qualcomm is the world's largest supplier of mobile chips.
At the heart of this fight is a disagreement over how much Apple should pay Qualcomm for technology licenses. Apple believes the fee should be based on a percentage of the Qualcomm modem that goes into the iPhone, while the chipmaker believes the percentage should be based on the value of the entire phone.
Qualcomm alleges that the new iPhone X, which offers users the ability to bring up different windows of apps with a swipe, copies the interface used by the Pre. Qualcomm cites tech sites The Verge and TechCrunch's commentary that compares the iOS operating system to the Pre's "card-based multitasking system."
      MORE APPLE VS. QUALCOMM
Qualcomm seeks ban on sales of Intel-based iPhone X in US Apple fires back at Qualcomm in lawsuit over battery patents What the Apple-Qualcomm battle means for your next iPhone (FAQ) Other Palm patents involve the ability to autofocus the camera by touching the screen, a simplified single power button and the ability to answer a phone call with a text message.
The fresh complaints support Qualcomm's argument that Apple uses more of its technology than just the modem and that other aspects of the iPhone are helped by Qualcomm innovations.
Qualcomm declined to comment beyond the filings.
An Apple spokesman declined to comment beyond its own countersuit.
Palm has been on a curious journey to get to this point. The company was originally purchased by Hewlett-Packard, which failed to use webOS as a platform for its own consumer products. LG ended up with webOS as a platform for its televisions, while Chinese TV and phone maker TCL purchased the rights to use the Palm name.
