LB731 webOS - problem with subtitle encoding and mkv files

Question

Posted

Hello,
I got few MKV files where i cant change subtitle encoding (when i change encoding nothing happens). Other settings work fine (size, color, position).

Im using Smartshare.

Software Version: 03.23.24

webOS TV Version: 1.2.0-2724

MKV files where changing subtitle encoding doesn't work:

mkv-utf-8.png

MKV files that work fine:
mkv.png

I did test one subtitle on both MKV files, and on one subtitle encoding works, on another MKV i cant change encoding.

Did try serviio and direct over USB HD.

How to fix this? I really want to play my movies and have normal subtitles.... Thanks

After removing internal subtitle "text stream: UTF-8" from MKV character encoding works. Is this a bug?

Yes, this is probably a bug of WebOS and LG do not take any action. Furthermore, there is a problem when reading UTF-8 subtitles. Appear strange symbols sometimes.

Personally, I always convert subtitles in ANSI and have no problem with their transcripts.

What do you use to convert the subtitle to ANSI ? Does this make the strange symbols disappear, while viewing a movie with subs?

I convert subtitles from UTF-8 to ANSI with "Notepad + +".

Yes, strange symbols disappear.

If I play an MKV video from a USB drive that contains multiple subtitle tracks with correct language tags, will webOS automatically select the appropriate subtitles, for example based on the TV interface language or the country where the TV is being used? Or it will just select first one/makred as fefault?

I have noticed a problem with webOS, i have С4 OLED and G5 OLED - and all of them running videos on youtube at low 1080p or no higher that 1440p with 50/60p - and i don't understand why.. everywhere else is fine, but on webOS is 50/50 i tried every codec possible and everytime my videos stuck on 1080p or 1440p - it's a problem! please fix it!
PS everything is fine if i upload 4k25p or 4k30p
PSS it's a problem only on webOS - on PC or android everything is OK.
