SEOUL, Mar. 9, 2021 — LG Electronics (LG) has won a patent infringement lawsuit against TCL Communication Technology Limited and two European affiliated entities (TCL).

Last week the Mannheim Regional Court in Germany ruled in favor of LG in a lawsuit the company filed against TCL in November 2019. The ruling found that TCL had infringed on claims in LG’s standard essential patent EP 2 627 146 B1 in Germany covering specific LTE technology. Following the court’s judgment, LG is taking immediate steps to stop TCL from the unlawful use of LG’s technology without license. TCL can appeal the judgment and a nullity action against the patent by TCL is pending at the German Federal Patent Court.

Of the two remaining lawsuits filed by LG against TCL, one took place on March 2 while the third lawsuit will be heard in May.

“Our patented technologies are the fruit of continuous research and development and are central to our ongoing competitiveness in the industry and what motivates our employees to think creatively,” said Cho Hwi-jae, vice president and head of LG’s Intellectual Property Center. “We believe it is our responsibility to vigorously protect our intellectual property against any and all unauthorized uses.”

LG is a global technological leader in the mobile communications field and possesses one of the largest portfolios of standard essential patents in the field. According to TechIPm, a professional intellectual property research and consulting firm, LG ranked first globally for five consecutive years (2012 to 2016) in the 4G (LTE/LTE-A) standard essential patent category. And Germany-based market intelligence company IPlytics recently ranked LG third globally in 5G standard essential patent category with over 3,700 patent families.

Licenses Proprietary LTE Communications Technology to Wiko Parent Tinno Mobile

SEOUL, Dec. 2, 2021 — LG Electronics (LG) has signed an agreement to license all of its LTE standard essential patents (SEP) to Tinno Mobile, the Chinese parent company of European smartphone brand Wiko. The license covers all Wiko-branded phones sold by Tinno Mobile worldwide.
The recently completed arrangement is a strategic victory for LG, which filed three separate suits against Wiko in 2018 for infringing on its LTE SEPs. All cases were ruled in LG’s favor the following year, as were the two subsequent appeals filed by Wiko. The two companies were set to meet again in court this month, with LG seeking a sales ban on Wiko products in Germany, but came to an agreement three days before the new trial was set to begin.
LG has made protecting its intellectual property a key component of its business strategy in the era of mobility. As part of this broad strategy LG also filed legal action against TCL in 2019 for violating its intellectual property. Ruled in favor of LG earlier this year, the court granted a ban in Germany on the sale of TCL products containing LG technologies in addition to recall and destruction of TCL devices that had already been sold.
“Our agreement with Tinno Mobile is a positive outcome for all parties involved and will ultimately lead to better user experiences for consumers worldwide,” said Cho Hwi-jae, vice president and head of LG’s Intellectual Property Center.” Protecting our intellectual property is important to the many employees at LG who have invested countless hours and considerable efforts to developing the technology that improve our customers’ lives. LG is committed to licensing its standard essential patents on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms for the benefit of consumers everywhere.”
LG is already at work securing leadership in the next generation of mobile network technology, 6G, which is expected to be commercialized later this decade. In partnership with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea’s foremost research university, LG established the LG-KAIST 6G Research Center in 2019 and is working closely with Keysight Technologies to further enhance its 6G core capabilities. Earlier this year LG achieved a groundbreaking milestone in 6G development at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) in Berlin with the successful transmission of wireless 6G terahertz (THz) data over a distance of more than 100 meters outdoors.

In keeping with LG’s philosophy Art Inspires Technology, Technology Completes Art, LG recently took on the challenge of bringing together an artist with advanced OLED TVs so that masterpieces can be experienced exactly as intended thanks to the true-to-life colors and deep blacks of OLED technology. To mark the launch of LG GX Gallery series OLED TV in France, LG teamed up with pop street artist , renowned for his talent for reinterpreting classic masterpieces by the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci, Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt and Andy Warhol.

One of the most creative artists of his generation, Jisbar made history in 2019 by becoming the first artist to combine aspects of art, engineering and physics to send his painting into Earth’s orbit. In fact, his passion for pushing the limits is exactly why he was LG’s partner of choice to create vibrant art for LG’s most advanced OLED TVs.

This talented young artist created three pieces specifically for the LG OLED Gallery, each one boasting a different theme: Sport, Game, Design. One of Jisbar’s three works will be donated to the Téléthon, the 30-hour French charity event that takes place in early December every year to raise funds for neuromuscular diseases research.

In addition to his own unique style and technique, Jisbar is keen to honor the artists who have contributed to the art world over the years. Jisbar frequently paints with the pigment, a signature ultramarine patented by French artist Yves Klein in 1957 that is difficult to recreate. As seen in Jisbar’s work, Sport, the color takes on a whole new level of dynamism and depth on LG OLED TV.

In a demonstration in front of a live audience, Jisbar added finishing touches to Sport, depicting the Greek Titan Atlas carrying the world on his back beside basketball legend Lebron James. Jisbar used a sport-themed color palette of yellow, orange, brown and green to paint an interpretation of Superman to represent athletes’ superhuman athleticism and strength.

Jisbar’s Game painting brings the realms of gaming and television together through gold coins and LEGO bricks. In this explosion of creativity, the dominant presence is a classic reinterpretation of René Magritte’s , the well-known overcoat, bowler hat and green apple revisited with a twist.
For his final work, Jisbar took its inspiration from The Mona Lisa.

“I diverted from the original masterpiece with several patchworks for her iconic face to bring a more modern and chicer look,” Jisbar explained. “To match the design and premium aspects of LG GX Gallery series OLED TV, I chose to depict the hands from Michelangelo’s and sketches of iconic chair designs including , to express how design is constantly evolving. And to add my trademark touch to the piece, I used the spray tips I often use in my paintings.”

“I’m delighted to have a chance to work with LG with my show-stopping paintings,” added Jisbar.
