[pivotCE] LuneOS receives praise from LWN.net

Recommended Posts

linuxmemeAlright, let’s be honest. If you’re a webOS user in 2014 you have to understand how to use patches, occasionally use

‘s Linux Commandline, and may have even built your own custom webOS doctor using ‘ .

The tutorials can be complex for some of the fixes webOS users have to make but a basic understanding of Linux can really help.  Especially since webOS is built upon Linux!  If you already knew that then you might also know about .  Essentially, if you want to know anything and everything worth mentioning within the world of Linux then you’ll get yourself over to LWN.net for the news. And the fine folks over there just did a very nice write-up on LuneOS!

from LWN just published of the recent efforts of the webOS Ports team and their .

The review is simple enough and praises the UI.  Jonathan says, “The overall presentation is attractive and, in many ways, pleasant to use”.  Although he gets the no-back-button complaint part of his review wrong since he’s unaware that back swipe is the webOS and now LuneOS equivalent to the Android back button. (Try it again, Jonathan. It works. I promise.).

But he has this to say about the potential success of LuneOS:

“It would be a good thing if they did succeed. As nice as Android is, it is in need of strong competition from at least one open-source alternative. LuneOS, a community-developed distribution based on a known-to-be-popular system, could possibly be such an alternative if it could build up some momentum.”

Yes, a nice bit of momentum would be excellent.  Inside reports say that webOS Ports has built up a larger base of developers who understand form over function and are willing to spend time developing in the back-end of the core apps rather than waste time building beautiful UIs without the knowledge of how to integrate it into the core system.  And some of those team additions have been since the release last Monday.  Great news!

I think it’s important to note that competition doesn’t seem to really be part of webOS Ports’ goals.  .  From what the community has seen so far, it seems webOS Ports is focusing on core app development first and ensuring a quality product is released to the masses.

Will good things come to those who wait?  So far so good. And who am I kidding, I’m not going anywhere!

Have you tried out LuneOS?  These folks have. Check out the videos below.

      Hi,
I've recently bought a 65QNED913PA TV (currently with latest official software) and I connected my Bluetooth headset to it - Jabra Elite 85t. Whenever I try to use pause button on my headset (while watching YouTube, Netflix, Disney,...) sound gets muted, but video does not pause. When I push the button again sound comes back and nothing else happens. Should my TV support pausing video from my headset or this does not work by default?
      Regards
      Maciej

      Hi to all!
I'm really new into this and have a problem. My 2018 LG 55UJ635V-ZF has only webOS 3 (latest; ethernet-automatic download) an i can't use airplay or miracast. The apps i found in the store for mirroring are only pay2use to use this needed feature for me.
On the LG Homepage i can't find an upgrade for my TV an maybe is my tv really to old for upgrades or am i wrong?
Maybe someone can help me out or bring some light for me in this.
I also found the suggestions on this site for the firmware 4.70.70 (for the UJ's), but i can't download....error.
sorry for my bad english 🙂
      thx for your help, quartex.

The built in Web Browser will not play Videos on SOME websites after updating to WebOS Version 04.40.25 and 04.40.70. The web sites otherwise work fine. Here is an example that won't play since the 04.40.25 update ...
link hidden, please login to view ... Please fix this LG ASAP, it's really annoying. PS. It has nothing to do with any Browser setting, I have checked all that.

Greetings Touchpad users! The webOS Nation Forums went down this month -- unceremoniously redirected to some crappy review site, despite the community's pleas to let us save or preserve it in some fashion. As a result, we're looking here (and other places) for some kind of community forum!
For those who visit here, I wanted to let you know that despite all recent set-backs, the legacy webOS community is alive and well, still using our Touchpads, Pres, Pixis and Veers in 2023!
Resources to get online, apps to try out, and lots of other things to do can be found at webosarchive.org
We've also got a Discord server going -- it even connects to webOS Devices, through a modern app called SimpleChat. Come join us at docs.webosarchive.org/community
