As the new era of driving closes in, automakers are focusing more on the in-vehicle experience during development, especially the automotive display – the best way to unlock greater productivity and entertainment on the road. In this episode of Mobility Inside, we’ll unearth how the automotive display trend is changing for the better.

Automotive displays deliver useful information about interior and exterior conditions. They include the ‘Center Information Display’ (CID), which shows overall information, the ‘cluster,’ which displays the speedometer and engine status, and the ‘head-up display’ (HUD), which reflects information onto the windshield.

As cars become more autonomous in many features and functions, automotive display trends reshape to match new consumer demands. So, what do these futuristic dashboards do exactly?

Switching from one-way to two-way communication

In the past, cars would simply relay the traffic information necessary for driving via one-way communication. But as automotive displays advance, the driver, the vehicle and external devices are seamlessly exchanging more and more information.

Take your navigation app as an example of this in action. After inputting your destination, the system calculates the optimal route and ranks alternate ones based on traffic, which the driver can choose between based on their preference. In addition to traffic information, the vehicle’s temperature and external environment can be expressed, and the most recent displays even support voice, facial and gesture recognition technologies. In other words, it’s the new medium between the driver, vehicle and external elements that enables constant communication.

Going beyond basic traffic information

In 2022, we’re spoilt by all the live information we can view as we cruise. And in the not-so-distant future, cars will automatically provide information tailored to the driver through personal profiles, which means it works for shared cars too.

Cars will soon be able to identify the driver and passengers so that it can provide information based on their age or the time of day. For instance, someone on their way to the office could receive the latest business news, current road conditions or weather forecasts, whereas a high school student in uniform may be given info on popular textbooks, nearby restaurants or the week’s hottest songs. Like smartphones, automotive displays curate information, deliver smart experiences and even provide customized information on the go.

Switching from analog to digital

Since people process most external information visually, the latest automotive displays are digital to make checking information at a glance easier and have fewer physical buttons courtesy of a touch interface that ensures changing settings is safer and more convenient.

Applying the high-end material to match

Automotive displays are quickly becoming the centerpiece of the interior, largely because they act as a personal hub for all information and devices. That’s why applying materials and form factors that meet the needs of discerning consumers is more important than ever. Automotive displays use premium, high-quality materials for the elegant look that’s now all the rage. And the future looks even more remarkable with unique form factors like Plastic OLED (POLED) and rollable displays making their way into several markets.

Switching from general information to personalized information

Mobility-Inside_Display_07.jpg

When connecting to external devices, the automotive display leverages connectivity services to open new possibilities. Unlike a decade ago when the driver had two choices – the navigation or the radio, automotive displays now offer convenient, personalized services that take convenience and entertainment to a whole new level.

Occupants can connect a smartphone to check their schedule or work while on the move, listen to music based on their unique profile, find places close by or personalize their screen with a few touches of the display. With car displays becoming an indispensable part of the driving experience, their screens are getting bigger, curvier and more flexible so that they can show more information and help create the most luxurious interiors.

CID: Connecting people to their car

Mobility-Inside_Display_08.jpg

CID, the most famous among automotive displays, presents driving status info as well as entertainment to effectively serve as a Human Machine Interface (HMI). Located in the center of the vehicle, CID gives the driver and passenger access to a range of convenient features including audio, video, navigation, HVAC and Bluetooth controls, through an intuitive and simple user experience.

LG Electronics (LG) Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Company makes certain its CID is the best by staying in close communication with global premium automakers, which is why it’s now featured in several iconic vehicles – and counting.

The outstanding quality of LG’s CID has been certified by A-SPICE (Automotive Software Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination), an internationally-recognized quality certification model created by European automakers to evaluate the quality of software design, verification and management.

LG’s CID acquired A-SPICE certifications in 2016, 2019 and 2021. Its most recent certification, A-SPICE Level 2 (2021), not only proves that LG’s development process meets international standards for quality control and monitoring, but it also recognizes the company’s unparalleled development capabilities.

Mobility-Inside_Display_09.jpg

Moreover, LG received Excellent Vendor Awards in 2014, 2017 and 2020 for the 9.3-inch gapless curved CID used by the Renault Group, developed using proprietary technology to invent a smooth design that harmonized with the interior.

LG’s CID was also awarded the Daimler Automotive Group’s Inspiration Award in 2020, the same year its revolutionary P-OLED cockpit was awarded the coveted GM Innovation Award at General Motors’ Annual Supplier of the Year Awards.

LG will continue to innovate its mobility technologies as it strives to create an HMI that connects passengers to the automobiles of the future for that next-level driving experience.

World’s First Android Based Concurrent Multi-User Framework Redefines
In-Vehicle Experience With Single OS Solution

SEOUL, April 29, 2025 — LG Electronics (LG), a mobility sector technology leader, and MediaTek, a global semiconductor company, are showcasing their Android-based Concurrent Multi-User (CMU) framework applied to In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) systems at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2025), one of Asia’s largest and most influential automotive exhibitions, from April 23 to May 2.
The CMU framework is the first of its kind to be implemented on Google’s Android* Automotive OS (AAOS). This groundbreaking solution enables passengers to simultaneously use multiple displays on a single Android OS, addressing the growing need for enhanced in-vehicle content consumption as displays become larger and more diverse in the Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) era.
The innovative framework provides vehicle occupants with a seamless multi-device Android experience within a unified system. Drivers can use the navigation system while the front-seat passenger streams videos and the rear-seat passengers play games – all simultaneously and independently, in accordance with safety regulations.
Previously, typical vehicle setups with a Center Information Display (CID) and two Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) displays required multiple Android Virtual Machines (VMs). The CMU technology streamlines this setup by running everything on a single Android OS, reducing CPU, memory and storage requirements while minimizing system load.
The CMU framework transforms in-vehicle experiences by creating personalized digital spaces for passengers. Each user can log into their own display, connect Bluetooth headphones or gaming controllers, manage privacy settings and can even share movies, gaming and audio across multiple displays. Parents can set parental controls to ensure a safe and age-appropriate experience for children.
Automotive OEMs benefit as well, as the CMU framework’s efficient architecture supports sophisticated user experiences even on lower-spec CPUs, reducing costs and resource demands.
The CMU framework was introduced as a key feature of AAOS15. Beyond AAOS’s core functions, LG offers exclusive features such as independent Bluetooth headset support, Text-To-Speech, parental controls and easy mirroring using gestures. LG leverages its decades of expertise in optimizing the performance of Android mobile devices, which it gained while operating a mobile business.
In August 2024, LG and MediaTek announced the integration of MediaTek’s latest automotive system-on-chip into the CMU framework, adding more processing power to streamline development and boost efficiency. To highlight its potential ahead of commercialization, the companies are jointly presenting an IVI solution consisting of one CID and two RSE displays.
“By demonstrating the live CMU framework capability on the MediaTek Dimensity Auto Cockpit MT2718, we are highlighting the future of in-vehicle experiences,” said Mike Chang, Corporate Vice President at MediaTek. “These solutions meet automotive-grade reliability standards, enabling automotive OEMs to create new designs in confidence.”
“Our commitment to revolutionizing in-vehicle experiences through innovative technologies like the CMU framework is another major step toward realizing our mobility vision,” said Eun Seok-hyun, president of the LG Vehicle Solution Company. “Looking ahead, we will continue to expand our work with industry leaders like MediaTek to develop more integrated, intelligent solutions, transforming vehicles into true living spaces on wheels with unprecedented connectivity, entertainment and personalization.”

Together, they aim to deliver immersive entertainment to sports fans across various regions in the United States, including Boston.
“This collaboration will elevate the in-venue experience for our fans with cutting-edge technology while also expanding LG’s presence through dynamic activations that will engage Red Sox Nation all season long,” said Troup Parkinson, Chief Marketing & Partnerships Officer for the Boston Red Sox.
Meanwhile, LG is accelerating its media entertainment platform-based service business, targeting global sports fans by integrating the display businesses – which include TVs, monitors and signage – under its Media Entertainment Solution (MS) Company.
Earlier this year, LG partnered with AMB Sports and Entertainment to provide displays spanning 141 square meters inside the perimeter of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. LG’s commercial display innovations, including LG MAGNIT and indoor/outdoor LED signage, can also be found at Atomic Golf, a massive entertainment complex in Las Vegas.
“We are thrilled to be able to strengthen our partnerships with prestigious global sports franchises,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG MS Company. “We will continue to enhance the value of customer spaces and strive to provide differentiated media entertainment experiences.”

Providing More Tailored Options for Diverse B2B Environments

SEOUL, Jan. 20, 2025 — LG Electronics (LG) will unveil an enhanced version of LG Business Cloud, an online platform that streamlines the management and operation of LG commercial displays and hotel TVs, at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2025 in Barcelona, Spain, from February 4-7. LG DOOH Ads provides customers with a comprehensive, customizable and easy-to-use solution for commercial display advertising. Users can set key parameters, such as region, price and ad types, and LG DOOH Ads will automatically select suitable advertisements for display. This reduces the need for businesses to find and secure advertisers themselves. In addition, LG’s advertising solution gives users the flexibility to display ads that they have sourced independently. What’s more, LG DOOH Ads uses advanced AI camera technology to analyze viewers’ data such as gender, age and behavior, delivering customized advertisements based on viewer behavior. It also provides analysis reports on the expected effectiveness of these ads.*
LG Business Cloud also introduces LG Pro:Centric Stay, a new solution created specifically for short-term rental businesses. LG Pro:Centric Stay complements the existing lineup of software solutions available on the platform, including the LG SuperSign Cloud digital signage content management system, LG Pro:Centric Cloud for hotel TVs and LG ConnectedCare. Tailored for diverse B2B environments, these innovative tools help to ensure greater efficiency and flexibility in signage management.
Worldwide, LG continues to support major B2B clients with its seamlessly integrated signage software solutions. Mexico-based hospitality company, Grand Velas, employs LG Pro:Centric Cloud, a solution designed expressly for LG Hotel TVs. LG Pro:Centric Cloud simplifies content management and enhances the guest experience, allowing operators to provide personalized information – such as targeted discount offers for honeymooners or shuttle departure times for tour groups – to each room.
A prominent Spanish telecommunications provider and a well-known U.S. fast-food franchise have embraced LG ConnectedCare, a solution that delivers convenient and intuitive remote display management. Significantly improving operational efficiency, LG’s solution reduces the need to individually adjust each display and enables proactive issue resolution, providing timely email alerts to system managers in the event that a screen error is detected.
LG’s impressive digital signage software solutions – including the newly-added LG DOOH Ads and LG Pro:Centric Stay – are all accessible through the LG Business Cloud platform.
“With the arrival of LG DOOH Ads and LG Pro:Centric Stay on LG Business Cloud, companies can now manage their digital displays more efficiently,” said Paik Ki-mun, head of Information Display Business of the LG Media Entertainment Solution Company. “We aim to provide global B2B clients with differentiated signage software through LG Business Cloud, enabling remote display management and personalized content distribution.”
