What’s more, according to , about 73 percent of Ethiopians don’t have access to safe drinking water while 90 percent don’t have access to sanitation facilities, posing a dangerous risk as of communicable diseases are attributed to limited access to safe water, inadequate sanitation and hygiene services. Diarrhea is the leading cause of mortality in Ethiopia of children under five years of age, accounting for 23 percent of all under-five deaths or more than children a year.

So as part of its ongoing Life’s Good: Hope Village campaign in Ethiopia, LG initiated a project to provide comfortable and sanitary housing, improved water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) to families of Ethiopian soldiers who fought beside Koreans during the Korean War. A total of 13 houses were built with walls and floors made of concrete to resist heavy winds and storms, much sturdier than traditional mud and wood. The two and three bedroom homes all had access to a new communal lavatory and kitchen as well. The new homeowners were presented with keys to their homes at a handover ceremony last month. At the event, South Korean Ambassador Kang Seok-hee applauded LG’s initiative in improving relations between Ethiopia and South Korea.

“LG showed that a private company can play a role of public diplomacy by completing this project in a fairly speedy manner,” Ambassador Kang said. “I am confident that the friendship between Korea and Ethiopia has become much stronger with the public diplomacy activity of LG.”

The Addis Ababa City administration office has also expressed its appreciation for the practical support provided by LG in different social settings and committed to collaborating with LG for the success of all future projects.

LG will continue to engage in various social activities to make sure it can make life better for all and promote mutual growth around the world.

Busan, South Korea’s beautiful port city, is among several cities to have officially announced their desire to host World Expo 2030, after it turned in a formal bid to the Bureau International des Expositions in September under the city’s theme: “Transforming Our World, Navigating Toward a Better Future.”
To express its passionate support for a Korean city beloved by millions across the globe, LG CEO William Cho recently headed to three countries in Africa including Tanzania, Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia as a special envoy for South Korea.

On his first visit to the region since his appointment last year, Mr. Cho was on a mission to not only promote greater cooperation with East Africa, but also highlight the company’s full support for vibrant Busan’s World Expo 2030 ambitions.
During his visit, CEO Cho also made sure to state how East Africa had become a promising, rapidly-growing market through strong economic fundamentals underpinned by a youthful, urbanizing middle-class population and ever-increasing investment in infrastructure and other key economic sectors.
“As we see great opportunities and potential in this market, we will continue to strengthen our business relationships with countries in the region to help them unlock their full potential,” said Mr. Cho.

While visiting Tanzania, Mr. Cho met with Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa and several other senior government officials to pledge the company’s commitment to expanding the nation’s distribution and retail network in an effort to aid the growth of the economy and make life better for local communities.

During this memorable meeting, Prime Minister Majaliwa lauded LG for believing in the country through investment and creating opportunities for locals.
“We applaud LG for its contributions to our economy and reaffirm our government’s support in creating a conducive environment for local and foreign companies willing to do business in Tanzania,” said Prime Minister Majaliwa.

To expand its business in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Sudan, LG is opening new shops and refurbishing existing ones as it seeks to keep pace with the continent’s rising demand for the company’s home appliances, entertainment devices and air solutions.
The company will continue championing Busan, Korea’s picturesque coastal city, as the perfect host for World Expo 2030 by executing diverse promotional events worldwide with the help of its influential global network comprised of 140 subsidiaries.

Sports promote greater diversity by bringing cultures and people together and its profound impact is felt in many spheres of life. But since the start of the pandemic, most of the world has not been able to enjoy the fruits and joys of this favorite pastime. As countries slowly begin reopening for business and return to life as usual, LG East Africa partnered with the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) to recognize and reward outstanding sporting talent in Kenya.

The LG Sports Personality of the Month Award, a year-long collaboration, gives LG and SJAK the opportunity to put a spotlight on the most exceptional Kenyan sportsmen and sportswomen for their achievements. A winner is selected by a panel of SJAK members from eight different media outlets in Kenya every month. Five athletes in the fields of tennis, basketball, boxing and marathon running have already been recognized this year with LG Sports Personality of the Month Awards.

Winners to date include tennis star Angela Okutoyi and basketball player Tylor Okari Ongwae who were both awarded LG Instaview refrigerators in recognition of their amazing achievements on their respective courts. Boxer Elly Ajowi received an LG NanoCell TV while Ruth Chepng’etich, who recently set the world record for the half marathon, received an LG AI DD washing machine for her contribution to the sport. Earlier this week marathoner Titus Ekiru was named the latest winner which included the prize of an LG SolarDOM oven.
“This award has really motivated me to do well in my next race in Tokyo so I can hopefully bring back another medal for Kenya,” said Chepng’etich.

      Ruth Chepng’etich
This isn’t the first time LG has worked with SJAK, having previously coordinated on the nation’s Footballer of the Month award. According to SJAK president Chris Mbaisi, the LG Sports Personality of the Month Award is already motivating both up-and-coming and established athletes alike at a time when the sports world has had little to be optimistic about.

      Elly Ajowi
Boxer Ajowi applauded LG and SJAK for creating the much-appreciated award program and said the recognition would inspire other boxers to be the best that they can be in the sport.
Throughout these creative partnerships, LG is demonstrating its commitment to social sustainability. Collaborations such as the LG Sports Personality of the Month Award underline the crucial role the private sector can play in championing the development of local talent who could one day go for gold and bring pride to a whole nation.

Sadly, in 2021 there are still millions of children worldwide who don’t have access to quality education. Like many developing countries around the world, Kenya is working hard to address this situation and meet the
link hidden, please login to view on the delivery of an inclusive and equitable education for its people. To provide its youth with the learning opportunities they deserve, a key component of Kenya’s efforts is renovating and expanding existing infrastructure. In Machakos County, about 60 kilometers southeast of Nairobi, the LG team in Kenya is supporting this worthy goal by helping to improve learning facilities at several local schools, including the Machakos School for the Deaf and the Kyumbi Primary School.

LG is working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Kenya and the county government of Machakos to provide students in the county with a learning environment that can help them reach their full potential. From boosting students’ health and attendance to increasing academic achievement and providing a greater sense of self-worth for both students and teaching staff, improving a school’s facilities has been shown to have a number of positive effects.

To better serve its 225 hearing-impaired students, the Machakos School for the Deaf identified the need for a new library as well as a significant upgrade to its existing water borehole and plumbing. As a key donor, LG Kenya participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the library last month. During the event, students thanked benefactors with enthusiastic songs and dance and participated in a tree planting to enhance the school’s grounds.
LG Kenya is also contributing toward the construction of two new toilet blocks and donating several home appliances including refrigerators for the school’s kitchen and washing machines and dryers to keep students’ uniforms clean.

“The pandemic has increased the need for safe, resilient and healthy communities, and schools are a large part of that equation,” said Habitat for Humanity Kenya spokesperson Ruth Odera at the ceremony. “We are glad to contribute towards meeting this need in Machakos County through providing quality buildings and improved access to water and sanitation at the Machakos School for the Deaf.”
Addressing ceremony attendees, LG Electronics Managing Director for East and Central Africa, Kim Sa-nyoung, added, “LG believes strongly in giving back to the community and making life better. This project is also important to us since it aids Kenya’s overall efforts to meet the United Nations’ SDG4 and create fair and equal learning opportunities for all.”

LG Kenya is also part of an initiative benefitting 400 early learners at Kyumbi Primary School in Machakos County. In operation since December, the project involves the construction of restrooms, classrooms, kitchens and various other facilities to improve learning outcomes. At an event to mark the project’s launch, Father Joseph Mutuku cut the ceremonial ribbon and blessed the construction site on behalf the school’s official sponsor, St. Christopher Catholic Parish Kyumbi.

The work at Machakos School for the Deaf and Kyumbi Primary School is set to be concluded by March this year, with all infrastructure fully completed and ready to support the next generation in their learning journey. Through forging partnerships and fostering trust with the local community, government and like-minded organizations, LG is making a difference today, and helping to pave the way for a better tomorrow.
