Celebrating ten years of Treo

and marveling at all that had happened in just the preceding 365 days. But webOS Nation reader Tim O'Brien pointed out something pretty crazy that hadn't even occurred to us: this February also marks the ten-year anniversary of the Treo smartphone.

That's right, a full decade ago the world finally got its hands on the first Palm OS-powered smartphone from Handspring in the . How state-of-the-art was this smartphone? The Treo 180 had a 2.8" 160x160 16-scale monochromatic resistive touchscreen and a full QWERTY keypad (the 180g had a Graffiti area in its place) over top of a blazingly fast 33MHz Motorola DragonBall VZ MC68VZ328 processor, 16MB of RAM and 4MB of ROM. It was 2.7 inches wide, 4.3 tall, and a slim 0.708 inches thick, and weighed in at a featherweight 5.18 ounces thanks to its steel blue plastic shell. The Treo 180 ran Palm OS 3.5 with deep phone integration thanks to Handspring's VisorPhone software.

While the Treo 180 wasn't the world's first smartphone - that honor technically goes to IBM all the way back in 1992 (Ericsson was the first to market a 'smartphone' with the Symbian-powered R380 in 2000, and Palm teamed up with Kyocera to release the Palm OS-powered 6035) - it and the BlackBerry 5810 released a month later were the devices that really kicked off the idea that a smartphone was more than just a niche product for high-flying CEOs.

So happy tenth birthday, Treo 180. since February 2002, and it's thanks in large part to your pioneering ways.

Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, serves as an essential call to action for the preservation of our planet for future generations. LG is dedicated to promoting this cause through local initiatives, underlining the impact of every action in protecting our environment.
LG USA aims to foster a greater appreciation for our environment and promote sustainable practices, with the goal of instigating positive change and contributing to the long-term health of our planet. The company is actively seeking to make a real difference by inspiring the next generation of conservationists and addressing urgent issues such as the extinction crisis and climate change.

To reinforce its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, and to reflect its ā€˜Lifeā€™s Goodā€™ ethos, LG organized the ā€˜Lifeā€™s Good Earth Day Fairā€™ on April 22 at its Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey campus. This public event featured a range of activities emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices.

There's been a lot of frustration over the years since LG aquired webOS and moved it into all their TVs, specifically around software updates. After a year or so, updates are not always available, mostly due to model and hardware limitations. Now come teh 2024 webOS TVs and LG is promising to keep you updated for at least five years! That's quite a turnaround from years past..

The news is part of the recent 2024 QNED Announcement:
LG 2024 QNED TVs also elevate the home entertainment experience with versatile personalization and increased convenience. With the webOS Re:New program,* LG is offering an upgrade to the latest version of its webOS smart TV platform to give more smart TV owners the most up-to-date user experience for the next five years. Trees are vital. There is no denying how trillions of trees around the world are central to all life on Earth. Not only do Mother Natureā€™s skyscrapers provide clean, fresh air and cozy habitats to thousands of living species, but they also help us combat climate change and preserve biodiversity for many decades to come.

In ensuring that this legacy can be passed onto future generations, LG Indonesia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Conservation of Natural Resources Jakarta to celebrate their 32 years of operation in Indonesia. For this purpose, the company pledged to plant 32,000 trees across Jakarta, Kalimantan and Sumatra by April 2023.
Jay Jang, director of marketing and relations at LG Electronics Indonesia,
shaking hands with Abdul Kodir, head of the Conservation of Natural Resources Jakarta
This initiative sheds light on LGā€™s commitment to environmental sustainability in Indonesia in the same fashion as the companyā€™s eco-friendly solutions, products and technologies, including their energy-saving inverter technology, which helps customers achieve a more eco-conscious lifestyle by improving energy efficiency. Incorporated into a wide range of household appliances, such as refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners, this cutting-edge inverter provides users with peace of mind as they are able to easily manage their ecological footprints.

However, LGā€™s efforts toward environmental sustainability extend well beyond the tree-planting initiative. The companyā€™s technological interventions also complement its commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2030, through the minimization of carbon emissions and footprints across the overall process, from production to disposal.

LG is endlessly passionate about raising global awareness of environmental sustainability, not only through its technological innovation and world-leading products but also by implementing various environmental interventions designed in order to make life better for people of all backgrounds and localities.
