The mobility landscape has been completely reshaped over the last few years with landmark achievements being made in electrification, connectivity and autonomous driving.1 With next-generation electric vehicles and intelligent driving fast approaching, LG Electronics also has been hard at work developing future-enabling technologies to accelerate the electric vehicle industry to the next level.

Below, we take a look at some of those trends and LG’s response to them.

Telematics, or vehicle connectivity, is poised to explode on the back of 5G and advanced vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology, the system that transmits information at high speed via high-bandwidth, low-latency connection. LG’s In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system, which leverages the combined strengths of webOS Auto and Microsoft Connected Vehicle Platform (MCVP), can collect and transmit a wide variety of information such as driver status, door status and app usage seamlessly.

LG Electronics is dedicated to developing highly competitive infotainment innovations including AVN, display systems, telematics and monitoring systems that account for more than 50 percent of the company’s total sales.

Infotainment systems provide drivers and passengers with helpful information, such as directions and weather forecasts, on top of in-vehicle entertainment that lets them listen to podcasts, make hands-free calls and check messages. The fast-growing global vehicle infotainment market is projected to increase from USD 24.3 billion in 2019 to USD 54.8 billion in 2027 (CAGR of 10.7 percent).2 And with the increase in demand for more safety and security solutions, in-vehicle communication features and technologies will only become more important.

According to the Boston Consulting Group, the market for partially and fully autonomous cars will make up approximately 25 percent of new-vehicle sales by 2035.3 With the advancement in self-driving vehicles, one of the biggest concerns for car companies is safety which may explain why the global driving assist market is expected to grow from USD 1.9 billion in 2019 to USD 10.7 billion in 2027 (CAGR of 23.9 percent).4

LG Electronics is also actively developing components for driver assistance, such as the LG-designed ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) which utilizes a front camera to collect traffic information so drivers can make better decisions and roads can be made safer. ADAS can also recognize and respond to surrounding environments – even through busy intersections.

According to IHS Markit, global sales of electric vehicles hit 10 million units in 2020 and is expected to exceed 20 million units in 2022 and 40 million vehicles in 2025. Along with the growth of electric vehicles, relevant components such as motors and inverters are naturally expected to grow as well.

LG Electronics is working closely with Magna to develop cutting-edge technologies for components of electric vehicles. Under a new joint venture to launch next month, LG Magna e-Powertrain will produce EV components that benefit from Magna’s strength in electric powertrain systems and world-class automotive manufacturing as well as LG’s expertise in developing components for e-motors and inverters.

To respond to the rapidly changing automotive industry, LG is pursuing a strategy of strategic alliances and partnerships to develop industry-leading innovations for global automakers. In addition to LG Magna e-Powertain, LG and Luxoft created Alluto to drive the commercialization of production-ready digital cockpit, infotainment and ride-hailing systems based on LG’s webOS Auto platform. And in 2018, LG brought on board leading automotive lighting and headlight systems provider ZKW Group in a deal worth more than EUR 1.1 billion.

With vehicles of tomorrow just a few years away from becoming commonplace, LG is well positioned to be a leading provider of technologies for future mobility.

      Company Showcases Breadth of Technological Capabilities at
      Global Communications Conference in Seoul

      SEOUL, May 17, 2022 — LG Electronics (LG) is showcasing a diverse range of innovative, new mobility technologies, including connected vehicle solutions leveraging 6G and AI, at the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2022. Open from May 16-20 at COEX Convention & Exhibition Center in Seoul, South Korea, this year’s ICC adopts the theme of ‘Intelligent Connectivity for Smart World’ and features a hybrid format combining physical exhibits and in-person attendance with virtual content and online participation.
      One of the IEEE Communications Society’s two flagship conferences, ICC typically attracts around 2,000 attendees from over 70 countries. The annual event offers exciting keynotes and robust technical paper sessions as well as informative and engaging tutorials, workshops and industry discussions.
      In keeping with ICC 2022’s intelligent connectivity theme, LG is showcasing its OMNIPOD concept car; a fully autonomous, connected vehicle that can act as an extension of one’s living or workspace. LG OMNIPOD employs the unique, floor-to-ceiling Meta-environment Screen and a host of other advanced technologies to adapt to passengers’ unique needs. Able to serve as practically any kind of space, from an office or recording studio to a video-editing workroom or even a lounge, the OMNIPOD is a future mobility solution that completely reimagines the in-vehicle experience.
      Additionally, LG is displaying its world-class 6G communications technologies, including Full Duplex Radio transmission and reception tech that maximizes frequency efficiency, and a power amplifier device, jointly developed with the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), for the wireless transmission and reception of 6G THz data. The company is also demonstrating its Soft V2X (with V2X standing for “vehicle to everything”) smartphone solution, which enables a vehicle to communicate in real-time with nearby vehicles, pedestrians and infrastructure to create a safer driving environment. The company is also presenting its on-device AI chip, which can be applied to various home appliances providing a smart life experience.
      “As the automotive industry is transitioning to a software-enabled ecosystem, LG is proactively developing next-generation technologies,” said Kim Byoung-hoon, CTO at LG Electronics. “Based on its advanced 6G and AI tech, LG will continue to strengthen its capabilities in various fields such as 6G communications, smart mobility, metaverse and robotics to take the customer experience to new heights.”
      Named an IEEE Fellow last year in recognition of his research achievements and expertise in the field of communications, the CTO will be delivering a keynote titled ‘Technology Advances in Connectivity and Software Defined Architecture for Smart Mobility’ at ICC on May 17. Mr. Kim will introduce the company’s direction regarding the transition to the software defined vehicle (SDV), as well as its latest solutions and services based on SDV and smart mobility technology.

      Advanced Capabilities of LG’s Deep Learning based AI DD Technology Confirmed
      by Respected Third-party Organization

      SEOUL, May 11, 2022 — LG Electronics (LG) announces that the AI technology applied to its upgradable appliance laundry solutions has received AI Algorithm Reproducibility Process Verification from UL, a global safety science leader.* A first for the home appliance industry, the verification confirms the advanced capabilities of LG’s Artificial Intelligence Direct Drive (AI DD) technology which uses deep learning to detect the types of fabrics being washed, or dried, and select the optimal cycle and settings for each load.
      Performing as advertised, LG’s AI DD is the first AI solution used in a laundry appliance to be validated by UL. The company’s state-of-the-art technology was put through a comprehensive assessment to verify its abilities, with UL measuring several criteria such as the suitability of the ‘learning’ data used by LG and the performance of its algorithm in actual usage.
      LG’s AI DD-equipped laundry solutions provide customers with more convenience and gentle fabric care. The revolutionary AI DD leverages deep learning, a technology that allows computers to think and learn by themselves, to automatically determine the optimal washing pattern for each fabric-type. Detecting the weight and softness of laundry in each load, LG’s intelligent washers and dryers deliver excellent results every time, getting clothes and linen fresh and clean while also reducing fabric damage.
      LG’s differentiated AI technology has also been recognized by various organizations including the Korea Testing Laboratory (AI safety certification) and the Korean Standards Association (AI+ certification).
      This year, LG has taken home appliance innovation even further with the introduction of its upgradable appliance concept. Boosting user convenience and value, LG upgradable appliances can add new features and functions via software and hardware upgrades available through the ThinQ app.

      The future of mobility is just around the corner, with vehicle electrification underway and fully autonomous vehicles getting closer by the day. For some, it may come as a surprise to learn that LG Electronics develops and manufactures many of the core components and technologies now reshaping the automotive experience. In a relatively short space of time, the company has become a major player in the vehicle component business and is doing all that it can to accelerate the arrival of mobility’s exciting future.

      The company provides solutions – both seen and unseen – to some of the biggest names in the auto industry. One of LG’s more visible innovations is to the vehicle cockpit, where it has helped reimagine the entire dashboard and how the driver and front-seat passenger interact with their car.

      A perfect example of this is the infotainment (or IVI, a portmanteau of information and entertainment) system LG jointly developed with German luxury car brand, Mercedes-Benz. Featured in the , LG’s IVI replaces the conventional mix of a few, small displays and physical knob and buttons with a wide expanse of vibrant, responsive touch-screens offering easy access to a variety of helpful car and on-road information and top-notch entertainment options.

      In addition to the LG Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Company, which is the official name of LG’s dedicated vehicle parts business, a number of companies from across the LG Group are actively engaged in driving auto innovation forward. LG Innotek and LG Display work collaboratively to produce telematics and driver assistance systems, as well as IVI systems, while LG Energy Solution and LG Innotek have joined forces to deliver battery packs, battery cells and charging communication controllers. Advanced vehicle headlamps and rear lights are provided through ZKW Group, acquired by LG in 2018, and driving units – including motors, inverters and in-vehicle chargers – are being developed by LG Magna e-Powertrain and LG Innotek.

      Primarily known as a leading consumer electronics maker, LG recognized early on that its broad range of core competencies – including innovative home appliances and home entertainment technologies – would enable it to compete in the emerging autonomous driving and electric vehicle markets.       Recognized for ‘Sustained Excellence’ in Environmental Sustainability,
      LG Also Wins EPA’s Emerging Technology Award

      SEOUL, May 5, 2022 – LG Electronics (LG) has been named 2022 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This prestigious honor, a distinction LG has received nine times since 2012, recognizes the company’s exemplary commitment to protecting the environment through leadership in ENERGY STAR certified products and promotions.
      In addition to the Partner of the Year Award, LG received the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award last month with the EPA honoring 43 LG refrigerator-freezer models, more than any other brand. The award-winning models feature advanced adaptive compressors and use R-600a, a refrigerant with very low global-warming potential (GWP).
      Refrigerators that earn this environmental distinction outperform the federal minimum standard by at least 25 percent when the compressor is in adaptive mode compared to when the compressor is in a fixed-speed mode. Recognized products also contain low GWP (below 15) refrigerant and foam. Inverter Linear Compressor* found in LG’s refrigerator lineups efficiently keep food fresh longer and noise levels lower compared to LG’s conventional models.
      Each year, the ENERGY STAR program honors a group of businesses and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to protecting the environment through superior energy achievements. ENERGY STAR award winners lead their industries in the production, sale and adoption of energy-efficient products, homes, buildings, services and strategies. These efforts are essential to fighting the climate crisis and protecting public health.
      Under its Zero Negative Environmental Impact initiative, LG plans to establish more production sites that make a positive impact on the environment. To ensure that the company reaches its stretch goals for carbon neutrality and circular economy, LG announced its intention to reduce the use of petrochemical-based plastics by introducing up to 600,000 tons of recycled plastic into its manufacturing process by 2030 and nearly double the recovery of electronic waste to 8 million tons by then.
      LG is demonstrating what it takes to build a more sustainable future, according to EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “They are showing once again that taking action in support of a clean energy economy can be good not only for the environment, but also for business and customers. We know it’s going to take all of us working together to tackle the climate crisis,” he said.

      It starts ok but when I select a program it just sits there with the 'wheel' turning. It works ok on my phone and ipad. Have tried updating tv operating system and iview app but they seem to be at the latest version. Anyone else having problems?
