Is there space for webOS? [from the forums]

have always been a font of awesomeness, and there's no sign that's going to stop anytime soon. Some of our favorite moments come about when somebody poses an interesting question and the community runs with it. We've been having one of those moments since yesterday, when Matt put together a daunting list. On top of are and , with and soon fighting for a distant third place. Then there's the bottom tier, a group of operating systems fighting for recognition from a carrier or manufacturer, let alone sales. They include Firefox OS, , our beloved webOS, and the .

In an operating system market with two dominant players and two duking it out for a distant third place, is there really space for four different operating systems to be engaged in a battle royale for the attention of manufacturers, carriers, developers, and users? Compelling reasons to pick from this crop of unloved operating systems are few when there are established options like Android and iOS available for all parties involved. That's not to say that we don't love webOS; we do, but there's no way we could in good faith recommend to a friend that they go seek out a or a or (at least not yet…).

As Windows Phone and BlackBerry show, there's a question of if there's even a viable third place in this hyper-competitive market. Let alone a fourth, fifth, or sixth player. Apple, Google, and Samsung have succeeded at convincing users, developers, and carriers to go with their hardware and software, and it's increasingly becoming a two-party race in smartphones. The jury's still out on tablets, with Microsoft's and still playing out, but with the high turnover and subsidized prices of smartphones it's getting harder and harder to break in with each passing day.

Of course, there's a question of if webOS needs the be on smartphones to survive. Despite being on a dozen carriers world-wide for years and carrying the brand power of Palm and HP, webOS never quite took off like we would have liked. There's and we won't bother opening up that wound again, but it's entirely possible that the door has closed on smartphones for webOS. There's still definitely an opportunity for tablets, but things would have to get rolling in the very near future before that door closes too.

In all of the rumors and rumblings of what is doing, we've yet to hear a peep about smartphones. In fact, the biggest story of what Gram is working on hasn't been a smartphone or a tablet, but . Whether or not webOS will be a good fit for an HDTV, well, we'll have to see it first before we pass judgement, but it speaks to the flexibility of webOS as a multi-purpose operating system. It's entirely possible we'll never see another webOS smartphone or webOS tablet, but that webOS will still live on successfully in other applications. But when it comes to fan bases and communities, that's much harder to maintain when you're talking about televisions or (just ruminating here) automobile nav units or refrigerators. But we'll cross that bridge if an when we get to it.

I used to be able to surf to OPB.org using WebOs on my LG Smart TV and watch the Livestream with no problem. But about a year ago something changed and the Livestream became covered up by the programming grid (with a little bit showing above the grid) and nothing I can do removes it. Is there a way to watch PBS on my LG Smart TV?

Please take steps to include Airtel Xtream Play app in WebOS Content Store!
In India everyone is using Airtel network and Xtream Play as a bundle recharge offer with it!
LG TV is very good and technically advanced! For this mere reason of not having Airtel Xtream Play App, We Customers, need to switch over to other brands!
So, it is mandatory and timely, for LG to make Xtream Play available in WebOS TV, otherwise you have to loose your trusted Customers like us!
         Please think twice and Consider!!!

Hi, my LG webOS TV TN520S is running  software version 05.45.45 and since then the channel 4 and channel 5 apps are broken. You can start to watch a program but as soon as the first set of adverts start, the app just loops and you cant progress past the adverts. I a wondering if this is because the TV is running the latest version of its software (I've searched for newer versions but none are shown). Has anyone else had this problem and is it possible to install a previous version of the TV's software to see if this resolves the problem.

My LG television does not have a CI Module and pay chennals shows scrambled. In some LG televisions, some free to air channels work fine while others pay chennals will display the message "No CI Module". How to watch other LGTV "Scrambled" channels.

Winners Showcase Family-Friendly Gaming Innovations and
Address the Growing Interest in AI Technologies at LG webOS Summit

SEOUL, Oct. 1, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) announced the winners of its webOS TV platform hackathon, which took place at the LG webOS Summit last week. The event was geared toward AI-based solutions and gaming services, and sought ideas to enhance the gaming category on the Smart TV.
Developers from around the world applied for the opportunity to present their ideas for apps or services to be used on webOS-based LG Smart TVs in millions of homes, with the goal of diversifying and improving the gaming experience on the LG TVs powered by webOS.
Over three hundred entries were submitted from more than 50 countries. Finalists were invited to present their ideas onstage to a panel of LG executives and over 300 market-leading companies. The top three winners received a meaningful opportunity to engage with the LG team to develop their ideas and resources for business implementation on webOS. They will continue to work with the LG team to prepare the family-friendly gaming solutions for LG TVs by June 2025. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three winners of the hackathon, with the Grand Prize of USD 100,000 for first place, USD 80,000 for second place and USD 50,000 for third place.
Grand Prize Winner: The Quest of Sunflower by Couchplay
An epic adventure game based on an AI-generated story, featuring stunning graphics, immersive audio and responsive game play suitable for the whole family.
Second place: Signs of Magic by Lukas Klingsbo
Set in a magical world, this game follows the wizard Elowen as she battles invading creatures known as Astromentals. It integrates LG Magic Remote sensors to create an immersive experience that brings the action to life.
Third place: Thormdeil: Into the Unknown by TV Games
The first single-player RPG developed exclusively for a Smart TV platform, featuring seasonally AI-generated content. Players navigate dark dungeons, face survival challenges and uncover hidden truths.
“The amount of participation and entries we received this year is proof of the growing interest in the AI and gaming categories,” said Chris Jo, senior vice president of platform business at LG Home Entertainment Company. “We’re no longer simply watching television. The developer ecosystem’s role in improving the lives of millions of consumers in their homes is exponential, and LG plans to hold this event annually to foster webOS app developer ecosystem.”
