According to a study on global health and wellness conducted by NielsenIQ last year, people’s awareness of environmental issues, and the negative effects they can have on our collective health both now and in the future, are at an all-time high.1

Recognizing the threat posed by climate change and global warming, more and more people have committed to recycling, reducing household waste and choosing products from brands that share their concern for the environment. LG, a company that continues to prioritize the health of the planet, is actively seeking solutions to the world’s climate-related problems, leveraging its state-of-the-art technologies to cut carbon and greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency at the same time.

Reducing Emissions from the Manufacturing Process

Global Carbon Emission Status and Targets (Korea + Overseas)

First announced in 2019, LG’s Zero Carbon 2030 initiative aims to cut the total amount of direct and indirect carbon emissions generated during the production process by 50 percent (compared to 2017 levels). In addition to its far-reaching 2030 initiative, LG last year became the first Korean company to join the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign, which unites corporates and government agencies in a global effort to reach ‘net zero.’ The campaign’s objectives are based on scientific data authored by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and include the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Aligned with this, LG has already made significant progress in cutting GHG emissions throughout the home appliance manufacturing process. LG Smart Park in Changwon, named a Lighthouse Factory by the World Economic Forum, is playing a major part in curbing GHG emissions during production, while also elevating energy efficiency by 30 percent compared to the company’s previous Changwon facility. Among the many innovations at LG Smart Park helping to shrink the company’s energy footprint are state-of-the-art energy management solutions such as the Energy Storage System (ESS) and Building Energy Control (BECON).2

LG is also committed to helping consumers achieve a more eco-conscious lifestyle by limiting GHG emissions and improving energy efficiency during actual usage of its home appliances. LG refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and air conditioners adopting the company’s renowned Inverter technology optimize electricity consumption by delivering highly-efficient operations.

Using less power than conventional refrigerator compressors3, the company’s Inverter Linear Compressor has also been recognized by the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for reduced gas emissions.4

Eco-conscious Packaging and Recycled Plastics

Making environmentally responsible changes to product packaging can help to protect our planet, too. LG has developed its own packaging-design guidelines to reduce waste and move away from materials that can potentially harm the Earth and people’s health. The guidelines prescribe a more minimal use of packaging materials to reduce overall packaging volume and reveal the company’s increased focus on reusing and recycling. All LG home appliances will soon incorporate eco-conscious packaging. The company has already decreased its annual usage of polystyrene by 19 tons through the adoption of polypropylene packaging for the outdoor units of its system air conditioners.

Through diverse initiatives, solutions and cutting-edge technologies, LG will continue to reduce its environmental impact and help create a better tomorrow for all.

Earth Day – celebrated annually on April 22 – is a great opportunity for people around all parts of the globe to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
      Shared earlier this week,
link hidden, please login to view an event with diverse activities highlighting the importance of sustainable practices. Let’s take a look at how other LG offices around the world shared the positive message of creating a ‘Better Life for All’ in time for Earth Day.
To start off in Germany, the company turned Earth Day into a week-long event through Earth Week on its online brand shop. From April 22 to 28, German consumers will receive a 10 percent discount on all LG household appliances with a green energy label purchased on , not only saving money but also energy at the same time.

LG Germany wanted to fully do its part to contribute to a more sustainable future, which is why it partnered with the local initiative , a non-profit association that advocates sustainable environment protection and nature conservation. As a part of this partnership, LG Germany will donate 10 percent of revenue from the energy efficient home appliances purchased between April 22-28 to the organization. Aligned with Herzenswald Schmitten’s mission, LG Germany proudly supports regional afforestation and providing newly planted trees with individual protection against poaching.

And, to boost sustainable practices within the company, LG Germany celebrated Earth Day in its Eschborn office. Employees received a reusable coffee cup, featuring the Life’s Good logo, reducing waste on single-use cups and even further promoting the brand message in public. Also, to motivate employees to reduce their carbon footprint, the company awarded employees who came to the office by either bike or public transportation with a voucher from a coffee bar located in the building – providing an opportunity for employees to use their brand new Life’s Good cups and spread the message. The company is excited to see how many employees make the morning bike ride their daily routine!

Reducing disposable wastes is an important task, one that LG’s headquarters in Korea is also paying great attention to. In time for this year’s Earth Day, LG CEO William Cho joined in on the “Zero Disposables Challenge,” a nation-wide environmental initiative launched by South Korea’s Ministry of Environment last year to encourage the use of reusable items in public. In line with this, the company called on all its employees to boost efforts to reduce the use of single-use products and increase the use of reusable products.

In Taiwan, the company deliberated on ways to make a difference for the planet through small daily actions. LG believes that doing one little thing every day has the power to have a great impact when accumulated over time.

To highlight this message, LG Taiwan unveiled a challenge on its official social media page, inviting users to reshare their Instagram story template, selecting what good things – no matter how big or small – they do to show that they love the earth! Running from April 22 to May 5, the company will select six winners who will receive a gift card.

Last but not least, LG Spain created a video outlining their on-going efforts to create a better planet. In the video shared via its social channels, the company introduces their Smart Green movement, an initiative that uses technology as a means to regenerate the ecosystem. The movement’s goals include ; to ensure the pollination of countless endemic plants; and restoring the seabed, which is home to thousands of plant and animal species. Already seeing great results, LG Spain reiterated its commitment to work with its local partners to change the world for the better.
LG believes Life’s Good but also understands that true enjoyment requires care and attention. The company is committed to not only crafting sustainable products but also to participating in initiatives that foster a better, cleaner future.

New employees are one of the most valuable customers of a company and they’re also a key driving force behind its future growth. Recognizing their significance, it’s just common sense for businesses to listen to their voices as much as they listen to what consumers have to say.
In recent surveys conducted in South Korea,* it was found that Gen Zers, in particular, chose ‘Opportunities for Personal Growth’ and ‘Personal Growth and Self-realization’ as key factors for a satisfactory work life. It was clear that demand for self-development at the workplace was growing amongst younger generations. In line with such findings, LG has been running various training programs aimed at promoting the career growth of its new software developers while at the same time seeking to create a productive and strong relationship-bonding corporate culture.

One such program is the recently renamed LG Bootcamp – initially created in 2011 as the No.1 New Software Developer Training Course. The program has evolved to provide training for not only the employees of LG but also other LG Group affiliates. It effectively supports the growth of participants by providing interesting and enjoyable, yet highly demanding missions on a daily basis. The program focuses on emphasizing collaboration over competition and embracing the notion that failure is part of the learning process.
LG Bootcamp is divided into two courses: the Proficiency Course and the Project Course. The Proficiency Course specializes in enhancing basic programming skills to help new developers pass the company’s software programming proficiency test. Successful candidates then progress to the Project Course, where they form teams to work on actual software development projects.

A total of 240 new software developers participated in four Bootcamp sessions this year. In the Project Course of the third session, participants formed 19 teams and were divided into two projects: the Embedded Software Path and Data Science Path. Over a four-week period, these teams diligently worked on their respective projects, and the top two teams from each Path emerged as candidates for the Software Fighter contest – a platform showcasing the most outstanding projects of the entire course.

In the initial presentation round, teams from the Embedded Software Path showcased their projects, focusing on the intricate task of designing and implementing a multi-process operating system kernel based on a simplified operating system design. The first team unveiled ‘My One and Only OS,’ a multi-processing operating system supporting a memory monitoring app, while the second team shared their developmental journey, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of their operating system project.

Subsequently, the Data Science Path teams took the stage for the second round. Their projects revolved around constructing AI models and seamlessly integrating them into embedded boards. The first team introduced ‘Alpi,’ an AI speaker capable of understanding users’ emotions and delivering personalized services, while the second team introduced a unique cloud game facilitating enjoyable turtle-neck correction exercises through facial movements.
The caliber displayed by the new developers during the presentations garnered admiration from the judging panel. Among them, Kwak Jung-ho, head of HE Service Platform Development Division, emphasized that, “in the age of generative AI, the importance of being able to strategize, oversee and identify suitable program applications will rise significantly, surpassing the significance of coding proficiency.”

The event wrapped up with the Ignite session, a program that always marks the end of LG’s Software Developer Conference. During the event, the trainees had the opportunity to showcase their talents on stage. Many of the new employees showed interest in various forms of art, such as singing, playing musical instruments, dancing and sports. The theme of the Ignite session, “Art,” was chosen to highlight the connections and inspiration between technology and art. Two individuals stood out with their impressive breakdance and K-POP composition performances, leaving the audience captivated and inspired in just five minutes.
“The Bootcamp provides an opportunity to explore a spectrum of LG products, including cloud computing, artificial intelligence, metaverse and web 3.0,” said Eom Wi-sang, head of Software Engineering R&D Lab. “I hope you all become developers embraced everywhere by acquiring the ability to trust colleagues and navigate complex concepts.”

While coding is a fundamental aspect of software development, LG Bootcamp recognizes that software developers require a diverse skill set encompassing software knowledge, technical expertise, requirements analysis, communication skills, teamwork and creativity. Acknowledging the long and challenging journey to becoming a software expert, LG Bootcamp seeks to transform aspiring software developers into seasoned professionals, continuously enhancing their capabilities.
The commitment to the growth of new developers entering the LG Group remains steadfast. LG Bootcamp pledges ongoing development efforts to provide continuous improvement and unwavering support. Observers are encouraged to keep a watchful eye on the transformative journey of LG’s new developers as they evolve into seasoned software experts, propelled by a supportive environment.

I have LB650V webOS TV and it is very annoying having to reselect the (Latin 2) subtitle encoding (Code Page) every time when playing the movie. Absolutely no excuse not to save the last used choice for the subtitle Code Page so I hope it will be implemented in the future firmware updates.

And one more thing about the subtitles: the options to turn on the transparent background and/or the character outlines has to be done - to improve the readability.
