[pivotCE] Skype is likely on the chopping block…again

1 post in this topic

skype_webos.jpgWe first told you about Skype support ending for webOS back in November of 2013. Much to our surprise support was returned within 6 months.

But here we are again, right on the cusp of another synergy service waning in the golden years of webOS.

Windows Central tells us this morning that pretty much anything older than Windows 8.1 Mobile will no longer have Skype support. And really that’s my interpretation since the article only mentions Windows 8 which was in fact different than 8.1. Their new infrastructure is based on the cloud and will move away from peer-to-peer. Why the change?

“Because of the transition to the cloud, Skype is having to leave some older, legacy devices and platforms behind:

The pace of change in our industry means that the devices and operating systems used by the majority of people shifts with time. Our commitment to deliver the best possible cross-platform experiences requires that we continually assess when it’s time to increase our focus on the platforms of the future. Sometimes this means that we must end support for some devices and operating systems.”

Not everything is being abandoned though.

“Skype says they will continue to support Windows 7, 8, XP and Vista, Yosemite on Mac, iOS 8 and Android 4.03 operating systems, and obviously Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile. So if you’re using a relatively new operating system, you’re good to go.”

So we’ll see what happens. I’ll hold off on playing Taps just yet.
