  2. MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--()--, leaders in connected TV and cross-screen advertising, today introduced a new smart TV operating system, called . River OS is built for ultimate personalization, seamless navigations across apps, devices, and services, and advanced voice-controlled TV features at affordable price points.

The company has multiple OEM (original equipment manufacturer) partnerships in place, through which it plans to ship River OS-powered smart TVs in India by the end of 2021, and in the U.S. and elsewhere in 2022. Major content streaming services and apps will be readily available on River OS-powered TVs.

River OS delivers seamless and highly personalized search, discovery, recommendations and viewing across live linear and on-demand sources. Built to simplify voice control and personalization, River OS uses natural language processing to understand who is watching TV, and delivers recommendations catered to each individual in the household, without the need to manually switch between profiles. Through advanced machine learning, individual preferences are matched to the vast world of content available across the television universe, to present each viewer the programming that is most appealing to their tastes.

Universal content recommendations and program listings are served up in a personalized home page rendered dynamically for the specific person watching TV, enabling easy, automated navigation regardless of app, HDMI input, or streaming service. All device, input, channel, service and app switching is handled automatically by River OS.

John Gee, chief business development officer for LG Ads, said, "With streaming dominating viewing time today, it’s still too hard for people to find, discover and enjoy the programs they want to watch, across literally thousands of content sources available. River OS solves that challenge in an elegant way and delivers new, fully voice-controlled smart TV features that consumers will find innovative and essential. And we’re able to package ad-supported content in a way that allows our OEM partners to deliver a high-quality product at an affordable price point.”

Content partners and brand advertisers will have a rich array of interactive native ad formats, including home screen takeovers, for engaging consumers on the largest screen in the house. River OS will have a personalized home screen with content and ads tailored to the specific user through profiling. All device, input, channel, and app switching in the Smart TV is handled by River OS, which will also have deep integration of voice control. - "With streaming dominating viewing time today, it’s still too hard for people to find, discover and enjoy the programs they want to watch, across literally thousands of content sources available. The company's new alternative TV operating system was created by LG Ads Solutions, which is a partnership between LG and Alphonso. LG acquired a controlling stake in Alphonso in January 2021. - "Content partners and brand advertisers will have a rich array of interactive native ad formats, including home screen takeovers, for engaging consumers on the largest screen in the house. Also read: LG's webOS 6.0 platform for 2021 TVs has a redesigned homescreen It is unclear what River OS means for the future of LG's webOS that has already taken a turn toward ads and personalization in version 6.0 that comes pre-installed on LG's 2021 LCD and OLED TVs. LG said that "major content streaming services and apps will be readily available on River OS-powered TVs", which could suggest that there is a link to webOS.

  4. FuboTVFuboTV’s fantastic live TV streaming service finally arrives on LG TVs

FuboTV, one of the best over-the-top services for sports enthusiasts, is finally arriving on newer LG Smart TVs.

While the app was already available on many set-top boxes like the Apple TV or Chromecast, it’s now available on LG’s native webOS platform on 2018–2021 Smart TV models (including LG’s fantastic OLEDs). That’ll give any consumers with newer LG models the ability to access the service’s 100-plus sports and entertainment channels directly from their sets, rather than having to rely on a third-party device for access.

“Over 90 percent of FuboTV’s viewership is on the big screen and today’s launch on LG Smart TVs expands FuboTV to even more smart and connected TV platforms,” Mike Berkley, FuboTV’s chief product officer, told The Verge.

Starting at $65 per month, FuboTV offers one of the most robust catalogs of sports-specific programming, though it has plenty of entertainment and news channels peppered in as well. ESPN, ESPN 2, Olympic Channel, CBS Sports Network, Big Ten Network, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2, and beIN Sports channels are among those available on the service’s base tier.

But FuboTV really shines with its sport package add-ons, which offer more diversity in additional sports channels than similarly priced live TV services like Hulu with Live TV or YouTube TV. That said, regional sports networks are fairly limited, but that’s a persistent problem that plagues nearly all OTT live streaming services — not just FuboTV.

Users on LG Smart TVs will now be able to easily record an entire series with a single click, customize their guide with their favorite channels, and add up to six user profiles, each of which will support personalized recommendations and user-specific recordings.

Unfortunately, one of FuboTV’s best features, the MultiView tool that supports up to four simultaneous channel streams at once, is still limited to the Apple TV, a spokesperson told The Verge. But hey, at least you’ll be able to use the app on your fancy LG OLED without the help of a third-party box, stick, or dongle.

I understand that it's non-trivial to support old devices but that's part of the process. If companies like Apple can support Macs going back 7 years with their latest OS release then I'm fairly sure that LG can manage it. It's not unreasonable for customers to expect that their purchased products get updates for a number of years and LG certainly have the funds to do so. The problem is a lack motivation on LG's part. LG announced a 14.24 billion USD profit in 3rd quarter 2020, they can certainly spare some budget to ensure customers are treated properly.

The issue is the hardware. I would hope LG could do something to support at least a 1 past year model tv, but at the rate processors and hardware gets updated, it's just not possible to update older tvs all the time, that can't handle the acceleration and would become too slow. Happens with all hardware, GPU acceleration allows for increased features, speed, etc.

This question always comes up with new versions, so we'll see if LG releases any news around this.

  6. LG's webOS 6.0 Smart TV Platform Designed For How Viewers Consume Content Today

    LG webOS 6.0

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Jan. 7, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- LG Electronics (LG) today announces the introduction of webOS 6.0 for its 2021 OLED, QNED Mini LED, NanoCell and UHD smart TVs. Paired with the new Magic Remote, the latest version of the company's acclaimed TV platform offers viewers a more enjoyable and intuitive content discovery experience. The upgraded LG ThinQ AI in webOS 6.0 supports new voice commands for both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, making TV management and searching across streaming services, internet and broadcast channels easier than ever before.

Users familiar with webOS will immediately notice the attractive, updated home screen redesigned for enhanced usability to meet the needs of viewers' everchanging content consumption habits. The new home screen provides faster access to the most frequently used apps and streamlines content discovery with the ability to receive recommendations based on the user's preferences and viewing history. To show recommended content and related information at one glance, the new home is displayed full-screen as a central hub for settings and the greater webOS ecosystem.

Beyond the new premium design, LG's new Magic Remote offers simpler controls when using voice recognition with multi-AI offerings of LG ThinQ, Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.* Simple to navigate, slick, easy to hold and use, the Magic Remote offers more user-friendly features including fast connections between the TV and other devices and hot keys for accessing popular content providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.** Magic Tap, a one-touch Near Field Communication (NFC) function on the Magic Remote, provides virtually instant access to a host of exciting viewing possibilities. By simply touching a compatible NFC-enabled smartphone*** to the remote, viewers can share content from their phones to the LG TVs or vice versa. Users can also view content stored in these mobile phones on their LG TVs while continuing to use their favorite smartphone apps and features.

Leveraging LG's latest in AI technology, TV voice controls and Magic Remote, viewers can simply get the info they need by using their voice. Magic Explorer, an enhanced version of LG's Magic Link, can deliver informative content related to what's showing on screen so viewers can learn more about the actors, locations and other items of interest in the movies and shows they're watching. The content dependent feature can also deliver an easy and friendly shopping experience for products appearing across select broadcast channels and LG TV services including Live TV, Gallery, Settings and TV Guide by changing the color of the cursor whenever Magic Explorer has information to share.

What's more, the new Next Picks feature can analyze viewers' preferences to discover more content suited to their tastes. Using viewing history data, Next Picks can recommend two live programs from broadcast or set-top box offerings as well as one VOD title or app that viewers will find most to their liking, saving viewers the time and hassle of finding what to watch next.

  7. LG's webOS 6.0 smart TVs have a new UI, NFC-equipped remote

The new smart TV software from LG also has more voice commands for use with Alexa or Google Assistant

    LG webOS 6.0

Seven years after introducing webOS as the platform for its Smart TV lineup, LG is introducing version 6.0 with a new look and feel for its 2021 4K and 8K TVs. The old blade lineup of apps is gone, with a more modern tile-based layout. LG Home Entertainment president Park Hyoung-sei calls this “the most significant update since we first introduced webOS in 2014.”

    LG webos 6.0 magic remote

An upgraded version of its ThinQ AI has more voice command control than ever whether you’re using Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. For traditional control, this year’s edition of its Magic Remote is a bit more standard than some of the previous versions, but also includes NFC for the first time, which allows users to share content from phone to TV (and back) simply by tapping it.

The new software includes Magic Explorer, which can pull up related content about actors, locations and items of interest for “select broadcast channels, while Next Picks analyzes viewing preferences to suggest things you might like. There’s no word on opt-in or opt-out preferences for these settings, but we’ll ask about them as the show progresses next week. It’s also unclear whether the updates will extend to older TVs in LG’s lineup, one way or another, the old HP software platform is still rolling on, powering new OLEDs and LCDs for another year.

Oh wow, thanks for clarifying. So essentially we all just waste our time here, as there's zero presence from LG on this domain?

If you look at the logo of this site, it’s pretty clear. Now, if discussing LG webos products with others who have LG webos products is a waste of time for you, well that’s for you to decide. As far as LG themselves having an official presence here, the answer is no. With that being said, I do know that some LG support teams read these forums.

How funny, there's dozens of messages here, but this is the first response from an admin. How about giving us information and actually solving the issue @Alex ? 65" OLED CX, no cable connected, popup messages happen. Turning them off in store mode, then going back to home mode, messages still pop up. Just spent £1800 on this and the forum admin activity is very underwhelming.

This forum is NOT owned or operated by LG. It’s a user to user support forum. Sorry, wish I could help you solve your issues, but I don’t work for LG.
